Description

In this lesson the students will develop their reading skills for gist and detailed reading through the context - interview with an illustrator Annabel Wright. The job quiz will be presented. Further practice with the use of Present Simple thought the speaking about their jobs and other people's jobs. They will also learn the vocabulary and grammar for talking about jobs.

Abc Handout: the text for reading. The task to match.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Job of an illustrator in the context of the interview with an illustrator - Annabel Wright.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1). Write the following answers on the board: I'm a teacher. I work in a school. I work 6 hours a day. Yes, I do. I like it very much. 2). Tell the students that these are my answers to four questions. 3). Elicit from them the right questions to the answers. 3). Write them on the board: what do you do? Where do you work? How many hours do you work a day? Do you like your job? 4) drill the question. 5). Rub the questions and make the students repeat them.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1). Give the handouts. 2). Focus on the photos of Annabel and on the question: do you think she is a professional artist or a professional musician? 4). Tell that she has done all illustrations on this page.

While-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1). Focus on the interview: explain that interview's questions are missing from the article and students are going to put them in the right place. 2). Focus on the questions: to check that students understand the meaning of the questions. 3). They match. 4). The students check in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1). In pairs they focus on the highlighted words and expression and try to guess the meaning from the context. 2). Check that they understand the meaning. 3). Read for the second time.

Post-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1). In pairs they decide what they think is good and bad about Annabel's job. 2).Get feedback: ask the students if they would like her job.

Vocabulary:Jobs • to teach new vocabulary about jobs.

1) focus on the picture - elicit the jobs, write them on the board.

Speaking activity (5-10 minutes) • develop fluency speaking about their jobs

1). To give handout. 2). Ask them to write the name of their job and fill in the table: what is good and bad about their jobs. 3). Ask each other: What do you do? What is good and what is bad about your job? 4). Feedback: tell about your partner.

Extra: vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • to teach the vocabulary: professions.

1). Give the handout. 2). Focus on the pictures: elicit the name of the jobs: I write it on the board. Emphasize the use of article.

1). Give the handout: explain the activity. 2). Pair work: what does he do? He is an actor.
