Description

in this lesson, students will be exposed to reading a text about a magician who has revealed the secret of his trade.there is quick discussion before going through the text and the teacher tries to set up a clear-cut context. Students will read a passage to get familiar with difficult words in the text and afterwards, students will read the text for gist. Students read again for details.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about trick in the context of the trade of magicians

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the trade of magicians and tricks used by them

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start the warm- up by doing a sort of magic to engage ss in the topic and it also helps to st the context. Teacher show the pictures of three famous Turkish magician and a stage trying to elicit some responses form students. Teacher also tries to brainstorm any passive words related to topic at the same time with focus on meaning and form and pronunciation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will give students a series of handouts that contain questions. Teacher divides the class into pairs. and ask them to discuss the questions. Afterwards, teacher will have a quick feedback from students.

pre-teaching vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • to prepare students for the reading for gist

students will be given questions to match some italics words with their appropriate meaning in a passage. this activity prepares our students to read the text more efficiently as some of them are inflicted with anxiety to know the meaning of every single word. then check in their groups and teacher will work on meaning, form and pronunciation.

While-Reading- reading for gist (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

Teacher asks students to read the text in 4 minutes to find the gist of the passage on page 96. there are two question for this purpose that helps to find it easily. then s check with their peers and teacher will have a quick feedback.

While-Reading for details (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed information in the text

Students will be given 5 minutes to read for specific information in the passage in the format of true or false question. This students should refer to the text if they are right and otherwise their peer comes to help. Teacher should try to keep the low profile as much as possible.

Post-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher will give students very short time to do the exercise 3 which is the language here lexis that they have been exposed and they should try to guess the meaning of the word in light of context. Afterwards, students will check with their peers. Teacher will work on the meaning, form and pronunciation but rather quickly.

extention activity (9-10 minutes) • to provide an opportunity to practice the topic in reality

Teacher will divide the class into pairs and give each group two different sheets that contain two different simple magic tricks so that they are not aware of their tricks. then, students should read the text very quickly and do the magic trick for their friends. then one in each group explains the trick for his or her partner. then one of them will become volunteer to demonstrate it before the class.
