Description

In this lesson, students will practise reading for gist, reading for specific information and reading for detail. They will also practise speaking for fluency.

Main Aims

Procedure

Review (4-6 minutes) • To revise the past simple form.

Students will be asked to correct the following sentences "Yesterday, I play a football match." "Last Friday, my father buy a new car." Emel were happy yesterday. No, I was sad. Then there will be a discussion about the past forms and the students attention will be focused on the irregular verbs.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • Students learn the form, meaning and pronunciation of some words that will be in the reading text.

The following words will be shown on the board. (bought- sat -waited -laughed -cried) There will be a detailed discussion about the form, meaning and pronunciation of these verbs. I will also drill these words in different ways.

Warmer (3-4 minutes) • to get the students interested in the topic.

Students will be shown a picture of a man and his dog in a cinema and then they will be asked the following questions: What can you see in this picture? What is the man doing ? What is the dog doing? Do you think the do is watching a film? Can you take your dog with you to the cinema?

Introducing the reading text (4-6 minutes) • To rearrange the parts of the story

Students will be given the reading text cut into four parts and and will be given four pictures that tell the story in the correct order and they will be asked to arrange the parts of the text to put the story in the correct order. Students will be asked to work in groups for this activity. When the students finish, they will be asked to go round the class to check the answers of the other groups. Then, each group will be given an answer key to check their answers.

Gist (3-4 minutes) • Students read the text for gist.

Three suggested titles to the text will be written on the board. Students will be asked to scan the text and choose the suitable title. Time will be sit for this activity. Students will be asked to work individually for this activity. When the students finish, the right answer will be written on the board.

Gap filling (5-7 minutes) • To read for specific information

Students will be asked to read the text and fill in the gaps. In this activity, they will read for specific information. Students will be asked to work in pairs for this activity. During the activity, I will monitor the students, and error correction will be on the spot. When they finish, each pair will be given an answer key to check their answers.

T/F activity (5-7 minutes) • To read for specific information

Students will be asked to read a set of sentences and decide if these sentences are true or false without reading the text. When they finish, they will be asked to read the text to make sure of their answers. Then they will be asked to check their answers with their partners. An answer key will be given to them to check their answers.

Wh/questions (6-8 minutes) • To practise reading for detail

Students will be asked to read the text for the last time and then answer a set of questions. In this activity, students will read for detail. Students will be asked to work in groups for this activity. I will monitor the students during the activity and write down some notes to discuss them on the board when they finish. When the students finish, they will be asked to go round the class and check the answers of the other students and discuss with each other. Then, students will be asked to sit and answer keys will be given to each group to check their answers.

Semi controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • To practise speaking for fluency

Students will be asked to sit in pairs. Then, they will be given clear instructions about what they have to do. Each pair will be given 7 pictures that tell a story and each one will look at the pictures one by one and try to say a sentence the other student will lesson and correct his partner when there is an error. When they finish, students will be asked to change their peers and share their stories. I will monitor the students and support them when needed. I will also write down some notes about errors in the form of past verbs. At the end, each pair will be asked to tell their story to the class.

Free speaking practice (6-8 minutes) • To practise speaking for fluency

Students will be divided into five groups. Then, each student in each group will be asked to tell his group a story that happened to him in the past. Students will be given a model on the board and I will focus them on the past form of the verbs and some words that are used to refer to sequence in events like first, then, and after that. Error correction will be through writing down some notes and discussing them when the students finish.
