Description

This language focus lesson is designed to point out the use of Present Simple Tense in question form. The context for the target language will be set through pre-teaching vocabulary and reading a text, and then the meaning and the form of TL will be presented to Ss.

Main Aims

  • To make Ss understand and use the question forms of Present Simple via Reading activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • While clarfying the use of Present Simple questions, it is also aimed to improve Ss' reading and speaking skills via reading and speaking activities

Procedure

Warmer / Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss necessary vocabulary that are related with the reading text, to make students speak about their free time activities

"Free Time Activities" is the main context. In order to set the context, T will distribute a handout with pictures. The handout includes the images from p. 32, and the images include 8 activities. In order to provide the necessary vocabulary, matching exercise (ex.1 on p. 32) will be done by WC. Picture no.1 - watch TV or DVDs -- CCQ: What do you watch on TV? Survivor? Picture no.2 - go shopping -- CCQ: Where do you go shopping? Istinyepark? Cevahir? Picture no.3 - go to the cinema -- CCQ: When do you go to cinema? At the weekend? Picture no.4 - go out with friends -- CCQ: Where do you go with your friends? Taksim? Picture no.5 - eat out -- CCQ: What do you eat? Burger King? Lahmacun? Picture no.6 - play tennis -- CCQ not necessary Picture no.7 - go to concerts - CCQ: Do you go to Harbiye Açık Hava concerts? Picture no.8 - play computer games -- CCQ: Which games do you play? PES or FIFA? T will raise a question: "What do you do in your free time?" T will elicit answers from Ss. T will raise a question: "What music do you listen to?" T will elicit answers from Ss. In order to link this pre-reading part to the reading section, T will say "Well, I listen to rock music. I like rock music. And here, we have a rock band." and T will show the reading text to Ss. (NOTE TO MYSELF: SEBNEM PLEASE CUT IT SHORT!!! - THEY ALREADY KNOW SOME OF THE VERBS!!! Just ask them questions and clarify the points they don't understand.)

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To provide the gist of the Reading text

T will distribute handouts with the reading text. T will give the task: "Please, listen and read. Find 3 things they do in their free time." (this task can be written on WB) After listening + reading, T will say "check answers with your pair." T will wait for a minute in order to give Ss some time to discuss the answers. WC feedback. T will elicit the answers from Ss, and write them on the board.

Reading for Details / Scanning (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss find specific details from the text

T will show the reading text and say "Please read again" and show Ss the T/F questions handout and say "Please, answer these questions". Ss will be given 3 min.s to read and answer. After 3 min.s, T will say, "check your answers with your pairs." 30 sec.s for pair-check. The answers will be elicited from Ss, T will write answers on WB.

Language Focus - Grammar (10-12 minutes) • To make Ss understand and use the question forms of the Present Simple

T will ask Ss to find the questions in the reading text. The following questions will be elicited: - Where do you live in the UK? - Do you like London? - What music do you like? - What do you do in your free time? - Do you go to concerts? - What food do you like? T will write these questions under 2 categories - WH and TF questions T will change / adapt the questions according to the class background. Through asking these questions to Ss and eliciting the answers, T will try to demonstrate the form of the question form. (this part may take a long time!) - Where do you live in Istanbul? - Do you like Istanbul? - What music do you like? - What do you do in your free time? - Do you go to concerts? - What food do you like? Then, T will ask Ss to ask 3 of these questions to their pairs and get the answers. T will monitor Ss. (error correction if necessary.)

Practice of Grammar (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss understand the question form of the Present Simple

T will distribute a handout which contains two activities. The first activity is gap-fill, and it is adapted from p.32. The second activity includes jumbled questions. Gap-Fill T will demonstrate the first question to Ss: T will write the question on the board, try to elicit the answer, and then Ss will be given 1.5 min.s to answer the rest of the q.s. WC feedback. WC feedback. (Pair-check might be done; depending on timing issue)

Production of Grammar (5-7 minutes) • to make Ss use the question form of Present Simple

T will ask Ss to write down 5 questions in order to ask to T. "Please write 5 questions, and check with your pair. Then, ask me." Ss. will be given 2 min.s to write the questions, 1 min. for pair-check. Then, Ss will ask q.s to T.
