In this lesson Ss practice prepositions of place through a card game (controlled activity), picture dictation ( semi controlled activity) and describing an imaginary room ( freer activity) in the context of strange houses.


Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of prepositions of place in the context of strange houses.

  • To highlight the key vocabulary related to context of strange houses.


Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss look at the pictures of strange houses. Ss disscuss about the pictures.

Pre teaching key vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To introduce key vocabulary

T elicits the key vocabulary through pictures. CCQs: Where do I sleep? ( in the bedroom) Where do I eat ? ( in the kitchen) Where do I watch tv? ( in the livingroom) Where do I have a shower? ( in the bathroom) Which one is in the bathroom, a cooker or washbasin? Which one is in the livingroom, a fridge or an armchair?

Meaning (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning

T changes location of the tv. ( on the lamp, in the fridge, under the sofa, next to the toilet) CCQs: Is the tv on the fridge or in the fridge?(In) Is the tv under the lamp? ( No, under the sofa) Is the tv next to the fridge? (No, next to the toilet)

Form (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the form of the target language

T writes sentences on the WB and underlines prepositions of place.

Pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the pronunciation of the target language

T provides drilling and highlights sentence stress.

Controlled practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss choose the card and locate the furniture on WB according to the instruction. ( The fridge is under the sofa..)

Semi controlled practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss work in pairs. S 'A' dictates the picture, S 'B' listens and draws. T monitors and provides help if necessary. FB: Answer key

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss think about an imaginary room. Ss draw and locate the furniture. Ss write sentences to describe the room. Ss present their rooms. WCFB
