Main Aims

  • To provide reading for gist and for specific information in the context of science.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide controlled and freer practice of vocabulary in the context of science.

Procedure

Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target reading topic, to elicit examples.

Teacher asks students several questions about their previous experience at school, if they studied science. Several pictures connected to the main topic are put on the board to elicit students' ideas about scientific theories. Teacher gives students handouts with the difinitions of the theories. Students match the pictures and the definitions.

Reading for gist (2-3 minutes) • To develop students' ability of overall understanding of the text.

Students read the story of Galileo's trial, put the paragraphs in order and identify which theory this story refers to.

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To develop students' ability to comprehend detailed information from the text

Students read the text again and answer the questions.

Follow-up: vocabulary work (8-10 minutes) • To introduce vocabulary items related to the text.

Students match the words or phrases in bold in the text with the meanings given in ex. 4

Follow-up: freer vocabulary activity (10-12 minutes) • To develop students' ability to use target language in communication.

Students retell the story of Galileo's trial in their own words, including target language.
