TP4 - Listening and Speaking

Description

This listening skill lesson is designed to improve Ss' comprehension of a listening excerpt and at the same time enable Ss to speak about the related topic. The procedure will be mainly based on L for getting a general overview of the main story, L for catching specific details through T/F questions and matching exercise. Besides, pre-listening part will include pre-teaching vocabulary related to the listening, the lexical set will be provided to Ss with ECDW.

Main Aims

  • The main aims of this lesson are 1- to improve Ss' listening skills 2- to enable students speak about a related topic

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide necessary vocabulary related to the text (ethics, moral, duty, responsiblity, etc.)

Procedure

1- Pre-Listening / Warmer (8-10 minutes) • To activate schemata, to prepare Ss to L activity, to provide necessary V

1- T will talk about her yesterday in order to set the context: "Yesterday I went to a hospital and the Dr didn't pay attention to me, I was very angry. What do you think of Dr.s, what are their responsibilities?... " - visual of a doctor and teacher will be projected, the meaning of the word responsibility will be elicited by ECDW. 2- T will project the picture of Confucius CCQs - a. Who is this? He is from China, very wise man. (Confucius) b.What is he famous for? (His sayings, his wisdom) c. What was the main topic he was talking about? (Ethics) 3- T will project vocabulary related to L activity CCQs: - ethics (noun) / ethical (adj): Can we say that ethics are about whether our actions are morally right or not right? (Yes) For example, is it ethical to steal money from a friend’s wallet? (No) Is it ethical to tell the truth? (Yes) - moral (adjective): Can we say “ethical values” and “moral values” have the same meaning? (Yes) Is it moral not to help people in need? (No) - duty (noun): I’m an English teacher; is it my duty to teach you English? (Yes) Is it my duty to cook for you? (No) :) - obligation (noun): Do you think that students should have an obligation of taking tests in order to pass their classes? What kind of obligations do we have in our daily lives? - T will show slides no.4-5 in order to elicit the word "lecture" Ss will work as pairs to answer the questions. "Who are these people? Are they students? What are they doing?" (They are listening to a lecture)

2- While-Listening / L for gist (5-8 minutes) • To enable students get the main idea of L excerpt

T will say: 1- Pay attention to the Track 24 and answer : "What is the situation"? Who is speaking?" Talk to your pairs for 2 min.s and check your answers. ---> Later, Ss who are willing to talk will give some answers. ICQ: Are you going to listen to understand the situation? Are you going to answer alone or with your pairs? 2- "What is the speaker talking about? Choose one of the topics." - T will show the slide - If Ss need to listen one more time, they may listen.

3- While-Listening / L for specific details (5-7 minutes) • To enable students to catch specific details from L excerpt

- T will show slide no.7 - T/F questions "Listen to track again, and this time you will answer these questions. Please read the questions, answer them. Later, check with your pairs. You have 2 min.s" ICQs: Are you going to answer them with your pair? - No. Are you going to check them with your pairs? - Yes. -Later, willng Ss will gave the answers to WC.

4- While-Listeming - Language Focus (6-8 minutes) • to make Ss understand and find the phrases for general statements

- T will show slide no.8 - T will ask students to match the sentences by themselves and later check with their pairs. "Match the sentences by yourself, check them with your pair. You have 2 min.s" ICQ: - are you going to answer with your pair? -no - are you going to check with your pair? - yes - T will say "Find the phrases used to make general statements." (generally speaking, on the whole, most of the time) - T will make students write 3 sentences with these expressions. "Please write 3 sentences with these phrases, and give it to your pair. Your pair will edit it for you. You have 2 min.s" ICQ: Will you write your sentences by yourself or with your pair? After 2 min.s, willing Ss will read their examples.

5- Post- Listening / Speaking (8-10 minutes) • to make Ss speak about duties and values

In this section T aims to give Ss more opportunity to speak each other. Questions will be raised and Ss will be given 4 minutes to discuss and make a list. What are the duties of a parent? What are the duties of a doctor? What are the duties of a citizen? Make a list of answers for these three questions. Work with your pair, you have 4 min.s ICQ: will you make a list? yes. --- will you work alone? no T will ask Ss what are the most important values / moral values for them, and talk as a group. "Please talk about the most important values for you, and explain to your group members why they are important for you. You have 3 min.s" ICQ: how many minutes do you have? - 3 Willing Ss will give their answers to WC.
