Description

In this lesson, students learn about the articles and determiners through a previous reading text about shopping. The lesson starts with an introduction of determiners and articles and would be followed by a diagnostic activity which will give me, the teacher, the current level of their knowledge. This will be followed by feedback for the previous activity and input. Finally, the students will get to practice what they have learnt and some error correction would be carried out by the end of the lesson.

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping

Procedure

Warmer (5-10 minutes) • Monitoring and evaluating their current knowledge of using "A" ,"THE","SOME" and "ANY"

Teacher will hang up on the WB sentences where there are mistakes of articles and let the students think about the mistakes as well as to come up with the rules themselves. After they understand the concept of articles, teacher will hang up sentences where there are mistake of determiners and let the students think about the mistakes as well as to come up with the rules themselves.

Presentation (10-15 minutes) • Explain the use of TL

The teacher will give feedback of the Lead-in and stress on the meaning, form, use and pronunciation. 1. I saw a cat abandoned in the street. The cat was very thin. Then,the cat saw a mouse. The cat then went running to the mouse and ate it. (When a noun is introduced for the first time, we use the indefinite article. Once introduced, we use the definite article) 2. He is a student in class. This is the president of Turkey. (When a noun is known, it takes a definite pronoun) 3. Carrots are healthy. The carrots I have in my fridge are very small. ( Zero article is used when talking about people or things in general) 4. An apple vs. A banana (An is used when the noun starts with a vowel, A is used when the noun starts with a consonant) 5. I usually eat some bread with soup. I do not eat bread with soup. (Some is used in positive sentences, any is used in negative sentences to describe ab unspecified number or quantity.) 6. I went to........... market today and bought .......... bag of vegetables and........... chicken. ....... bag was heavy. On my way back, I realized that I didn't bring.........potatoes! ( This sentence sums up all the rules mentioned above and students would be asked to do it in pairs)

Practice 1 (3-5 minutes) • Practice all the rules presented in the lesson

The students will be asked to do Ex.1 in pairs and will be given an answer key to check their answers.

Practice 2 (3-5 minutes) • Correction of grammatical mistakes/ familiarizing them with the pronunciation of articles and determiners

Ex.2 will be given to students to do in pairs and will be asked to listen to a recording to check their answers.

Practice 3 (2-3 minutes) • Practice all the rules presented in the lesson

The class will be divided into 3. (A, B,C) They will be asked to do the exercise together and will be a given an answer key to check their answers.

Practice 4 (5-10 minutes) • Freer practice of articles and determiners

Students will be given a handout where there is a fridge with all the items that are in it. They will be asked to work in groups and write (2) items that are in the fridge and 2 items that are not in the fridge in complete sentences and then write the sentences on the board.
