Teaching Practice 5
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students review the adverbs of frequency. In the beginning of the lesson, they are introduced a few phrases and asked to discuss some questions about specific activities. They are expected to use the adverbs of frequency during the discussion. As the main aim of the lesson, they listen to a record with a variety of accents. They try to understand specific words. This is followed by another listening task. In the end of the lesson, there's a semi-controlled activity and a personalization task to practice speaking. They are asked to work in groups and use the structure they've learnt.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To get students engaged in the lesson

Post some visuals about television, DVDs and cinema. Ask them to guess what they represent. After eliciting the answers from studens, write the related phrases for each one: go to the Cinema, watch a film on Television and buy DVDs. Give an example about yourself and ask "how often do you go to the cinema?". Elicit the answer once/twice/three times. Write the question structure on the board. Give them a few minutes to discuss the related questions with their partners.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To provide required vocabulary and make the listening task accesible

Get students to ask the same questions for yourself. Model the language and use required vocabulary. Write "it depends" on the board and the vocabulary to make the meaning clearer. S: How often do you go to the cinema? T: It depends on the season. S:How often do you watch a film on television? T:It depends on the type of the film.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with controlled practice of receptive skills

Play the recording. Ask them to circle the correct option. (ex.1,pg.63)Replay the recording for each section. Check the answers as a whole class. Demonstrate how the specific adverbs of frequency (i.e. once, twice) should be pronunced. Play the recording for the second listening task. (ex.2, pg.63) Ask them to put the phrases in the order. Replay the recording if needed. Give the answer key and the tapescript. Ask them to check their answers in pairs.

Ask students to work in pairs and sit back to back. Give them a piece of paper which includes some key phrases for the task and a chart to write their partners' answers. Each student asks a question to his/her partner and write the answer in the chart. Each student has got different key terms for their questions. In the end, they check their answers Comedies S1: How often do you watch comedies? S2:Once a month. S1 writes his/her partner's answer and then S2 asks a question. Monitor them and do error correction when appropriate.
