Intermediate level

Description

Topic: Language and Culture This topic is something that has briefly been covered in prior lessons, however in this particular lesson it will be focused on history and culture in various English speaking countries. The students will be focusing on grammar with the language analysis to do with the grammatical function of do, did, and doesn’t; subject and object matter in a sentence as well as a slightly challenging quiz covering the history of the countries Australia, Ireland and South Africa.

Materials

Abc Global Coursebook

Main Aims

  • The main aims of this lesson would be grammar focussed in terms of recognising the object of a present or past simple question and the subject of a present simple or past simple question. The students will be tested on their recognition of subject and object in questions; and creating questions out of facts presented with the assistance of a prompter in the beginning of the sentences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The subsidiary aims of this lesson is having students quiz each other focussing on two specific countries. They will practice creating questions and answers using the cues given to them. They will be tested on their memory of what they have learnt and they will also learn about the history and culture of various English speaking countries from the text including Australia; Ireland and South Africa.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead In (5-8 minutes) • Introduce topic of Language and Culture by stating that the focus will be on English speaking countries and their history.

T will begin discussion of topic with ss with key words English speaking countries on the WB. T will give first example of an English speaking country and ask ss to call out their answers. The countries that will be focused upon in this lesson are Australia; South Africa and Ireland. Given that the first stage involves Australian history, T will put up some images of Australia such as landmarks and well known events in the form of a timeline that has been taken from the text prior to beginning the vocabulary lesson. CCQs will be used here so ss will have a chance to guess what the images depict in the slideshow. Example i.e. Sydney Opera House 1) Is it a landmark 2) Where is it? 3) Does it look like a historical building?

Task 1 (2-5 minutes) • Vocabulary word/image jumble

This stage will require the ss to be presented with a list of vocabulary taken from the text that they will be use later in the grammar task of the lesson. Students will be separated into pairs and given a handout that requires them to match the correct image with the correct vocabulary. It is not important if the ss understand all the words at this stage as we will be going through each word as it is to focus on their reading and listening skills. ICQs will not be given here as it is a simply explained task.

Vocabulary Lesson (5-8 minutes) • Pre Reading Vocabulary Task

T will go through the slides depicting 9 different words from the text; providing a corresponding image; definition and word stress depiction. Ss will repeat the words using the correct punctuation and stress led by the T. CCQs will be used to provoke understanding by using each word in a sentence. I.e. Is the Sydney Opera House located in Australia? The purpose of this is the final preparation for the language analysis task.

Task 2 (5-8 minutes) • Discovering Object/Subject Questions

T will go through the rules of object and subject of past simple and present simple tenses. T will specify that the target words are do; does; and did. Ss will be given handout with 9 different questions to do with Australian history and asked to identify three that are examples of subject questions. The first question will be done on the WB as a class and the following questions by the ss. T will elicit responses from the ss by using the CCQ questions. Ss will be moved into groups of 4 to complete the other 8 questions in studying whether which 3 of the subjects are examples of subject questions. An answer feed will be provided on the slideshow following the OC discussion. CCQs will also be done here for each sentence. I.e. What does the word Australia mean? 1) Is it a country or a State? 2) Are the people of Australia, called Australians? 3) Do they speak English?

Task 2 (5-8 minutes) • Creating Questions out of facts

T will open the slide listing 6 other facts about Australia. Ss will stay in there groups and be allocated 1 question each group to create 1 question out of the facts provided. The ss will be given prompters of useful phrases to know how to begin to correctly write each question. The first question will be done as a class with T leading, with a language analysis being done to create the answer. Ss will turn over their answers and have an answer feed to be provided on a slide. Ss will then be asked to remember the question that the answer they wrote corresponds. This will ensure that they will be forced to use their memory to create and answer as well as a question in subject and object form.

Task 3 (2-5 minutes) • Pre Reading Activity Quiz on English Speaking Countries: Focus on Ireland and South Africa

The next activity is expected to garner some confusion when T is explaining the instructions. ICQs are essential here. After getting into pairs, T will explain to ss that they must answer and later ask each other questions from a cultural quiz about two English speaking countries. Images of the two countries will be put on the power point presentation to garner some interest and students will be asked some CCQ style questions to guess which country it is. At the end of a long lesson, they will need something like this to garner their attention and motivation. 1) Does the country speak English? 2) Does the country have a famous history of struggle and war? 3) Is one or both of the countries nominated for Culture of the Year award?

Task 4 (10-12 minutes) • Gist Reading / Quiz Task

Prior to the quiz being distributed, half the class will be named group A and half group b. Ss will be asked to remember this as Group A and B will be creating a subject/object question for their corresponding country. In their groups ss will be encouraged to help each other fill in the blanks of their questions. All ss will get a copy of the worksheet. Worksheets will be cut in half. Ss will divide into pairs, but all ss will work with someone that they have not worked with before. To avoid wasting time ss allocations will be given to them by numbering them and asking them to find the person that their number corresponds to, thus saving unnecessary TTT. ICQs to ask will be brief: 1) Will we be given a number? 2) After we are given a number will we find the person with the same number? 3) Will it be pair work? In their pairs, ss will ask each other their questions and have their partner give their answers to check against the answer feed that they will be shown on the power point presentation.
