Interfering with nature
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson the students practice skim reading and scan reading through a text about modern medical science. The lesson starts with a lead in to get the students acquainted with the topic, followed by vocabulary practice, which aims to help with the comprehension of the text. A speaking activity explore some ideas from the text and allows students to predict the content. The skimming and scanning activities are followed by yet another productive speaking activity which complements the receptive reading skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about modern medical science in the context of interfering with nature.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of vocabulary related to modern medical science in the context of interfering with nature.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project the photos on the OHP or show prints to the students and elicit the idea of modern medicine.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Divide the students into three groups and give them each a set of words and their definition. The students have to work together to match each word with the corresponding definition. Once they have finished, have them check the other groups' work and finally hand them the answer key to compare. In the meantime monitor their activity and check to see if there are any words that are difficult for the whole class and focus on them in the FB session. Give each student a HO with a set of statements related to the text. They will have to read them and decide based on their personal opinion if it has happened already, it will happen in the future or it will not happen at all. Group them in pairs or small groups of 3 and ask them to and provide reasons and explanations for their choices. Since it is about personal opinion there is not standard right answer. This activity will help students predict the content of the text. At this point, I have decided to skip exercise 2.

While-Reading#1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The students a given a set of 4 questions and corresponding paragraphs, but in the wrong order. Allow the students 3 minutes to skim the paragraphs and match them to the questions. Make sure the time limit is clear so it doesn't become reading for details. For FB give them the complete text in the right order.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging scan reading task.

Since listening is not a sub-aim of my lesson I have chosen to transform Exercise 3 into a scan reading exercise. Give students HO #2 with a set of questions and instruct them to scan the text and look for the answers. Have them check with partners across the room and then put the answers on the board for a W/C FB. If time allows... Share HO #3, to explore the vocabulary in more detail. Tell them to read the text again and find an expression or word from the text that means the same thing as the ones from the handout. Have them check the answers with their partners and share the answer key.

Post-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Have the students sitting in 4 groups and give them HO #4. Each group will be assigned a paragraph from the text and they have to discuss the positive and the negative developments of that specific area of medicine, living forever, cloning and having the perfect body. When they finish, they change groups and they have to tell each other which positive and negative developments they chose in their respective groups and why. Monitor and collect errors during the activity, for delayed error correction.
