Description

In this lesson students will learn about adverbs of frequency through guided discovery. They start by listening and putting some sentences in correct order. They will be exposed to the grammar at this stage and later they will work on the grammar itself. They will learn five adverbs in this lesson and practice speaking and using them towards the end of lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of adverbs of frequency in the context of film and television

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of TV, news, film and series

Procedure

Introduction (4-5 minutes) • To introduce my self and get to know students names

I will introduce my self and write my name on the board, Students will write their names on A4 papers and leave them on their tables.

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To set the context for lesson and engage students to the subject

Show a short video of Simpsons animation (TV series) and have the students guess the name of it. Instruction: Watch the video and say it's name. After they said 'Simpsons' Ask what kind of TV program it is. a TV series (They have learnt this in the past lesson)

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To introduce the use of frequency adverbs,

Students will listen to an audio which they have listened to in the pst lesson and put the sentences in the correct order. Instruction: Listen and put the sentences in order (Draw some lines on the board and show what order means, demonstrate numbering for this activity) Are you going to listen? (Yes) Are you going to write numbers? (yes) Students will compare their answers in pairs. They check their answers with the answer key after that.

Grammar discovery (5-6 minutes) • To help the students find out / understand the meaning of frequency adverbs

Ask the students: Who watches TV everyday? (They are familiar with 'everyday' and meaning of it) Someone says: Yes, Ask their name and put the sentence on the board: Ali watches TV everyday= Ali ....... watches TV. elicit the word 'always' After that give them some cut-ups (Always, often, sometimes, not often, never) and a cline. explain that in groups of three, they need to put the words in correct order from 100 to 0. After they find the correct order of adverbs, check the answers as WC, if needed you can have the class repeat the words.

controlled practice (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the next stage and finding the form

Students will match the five sentences in Ex.1 page 59 and check their answers in pairs.

Discovering the form (6-8 minutes) • To help students find the form of sentences and place of adverbs on their own

Give students two sentences: I never watch the news on TV. I, Never, Watch in bold Comedies are always funny. Comedies, Are, Always in bold Give the students two sets of card with these words on them: Subject, Adverb, Verb. In groups of three students try to make the form for each of the above sentences. Ask the whole class and write the forms on the board.

Semi-controlled practice (6-8 minutes) • To help students understand the use of adverbs and be able to personalize it.

Students will read and add adverbs of frequency to the sentences in Ex.2 on page 59. ICQs: Are you going to write the adverbs? (Yes) Are you going to write about me(teacher shows herself)? (No) Are you going to write about yourselves? (Yes) Students will read their sentences in pairs, Teacher monitors and takes notes of their mistakes.

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • Students can use the language and practice in a freer activity

Students will have some questions on a piece of paper, they need to complete the questions in pairs. They will ask and answer the questions in a different pair. Remind the students to ask follow up questions. Remind the students that they don't need to write their answers, they only write the questions and ask each other. Are you going to write the Answers? (No) Are you going to ask more questions? (Yes)
