6 - Safari
Beginners level

Description

In this lesson, the students are introduced to the vocabulary of people we know (neighbours, flatmates, collegues etc.) This is followed by the reading a text about the company that organizes safari in Africa. The students are supposed to practise skimming and detailed reading. In the end there is a short speaking activity.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about safari in the context of people we know

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of people we know in the context of safari

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students by introducing new vocabulary

T shows the photos of people she knows (relatives, friends, collegues). Sts are asked to guess in pairs who they are. To simplify the task T writes possible expressions Sts can use during their discussions. T elicits the answers and presents the vocabulary. Then Sts write 5 names of people in their lives and in pairs ask each other who these people are.

Pre-Reading (9-11 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Sts look at the picture of people from the Wild Things company. They are supposed to guess in pairs what the relationship is between those people what their job is. T elicits the answers. Then Sts are given 6 letters and asked to make a word in groups. The word is 'safari'. If necessary T presents the meaning of the word. Then Sts look at the photo of Salim and discuss in pairs what his daily routine can be. This is followed by WCFB.

While-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with skimming and detailed reading tasks

Sts are divided into 2 teams - Zebras and Giraffes. They are asked to find the fragments of the text somewhere in the classroom (sticked on the walls). The fastest team wins. Then Sts put the text in order. After that they read the text. They are supposed to find the answers for questions about Salim (Qs are written on the WB). Then sts choose paragraphs that discribe each picture a, b and c about Salim. This is followed by the matching activity. Sts match the questions with different parts of the text. In the end of this stage there is a peer check and WCFB.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T elicits answers for the mentioned questions to provide the model for the following speaking activity. Then, within their groups sts ask the questions to each other. Then sts write 2 questions and ask them to each other during the mingling activity. The brief FB finishes the lesson.
