Main Aims

  • To raise trainees awareness of the procedure for a reading skills lesson

Subsidiary Aims

  • to expose trainees to good methodological practice & terminology of reading lesson

Procedure

lead-in (5-6 minutes) • to raise trainees awareness of latent reading skills

Show ss picture of buying theatre and elicit responses. What is happened? What type of building is it? Do you think anybody died? Ask ss to read esperanto article and answer questions. Ask ss to check answers in pairs before WCFB

Eliciting understanding (12-15 minutes) • to draw trainees attention to latent reading skills and clues in texts / format / cognates / schemata that we can utilise as teachers

Ask Qs to ss - which language was it? Could you do the task? How could you do the task? What skills did you bring? Knowledge of text formation / cognates / background knowledge How did the teacher help? - show picture / give questions Elicit: schemata -"what do we call this background knowledge?"

activities and aims (8-10 minutes) • to draw attention to ts the aims of a reading lesson and how they correspond to different sub-skills, activities and stages

Give out cup of HO3 and ask ss to match aims to stage. GW. Switch groups and FB WCFB - give out answers to check

activities for different stages (10-10 minutes) • to draw trainees attention to different types of activities for different stages of a reading lesson

Write pre-reading / while-reading / post-reading on the board Ask ss to come up with different ideas for different stages - ask ss to think about the level of ss for different activities Change groups and give FB Before WCFB and give list of activities

Demo (20-20 minutes) • to expose ss to a demonstration reading lesson and think about components / stages of lesson

Show powerpoint of words and elicit vocabulary to reveal picture. Ask ss to discuss picture and words in pairs Elicit ss responses Ask ss to make a story using the words and pics Change groups - ss tell story to other groups SS read story and check guesses Post-reading: questions what happened to saunders at the end? What do you think of saunders / maggie / mary? did you like the story?

end of session feedback (10-10 minutes) • to review the session check learning / understanding and to raise ss awareness of methodology / good practice involved in the session

Ask ss to complete the T / F statements about a reading lesson. Check answers in pairs before WCFB
