In this lesson Studens will practise modals verbs have to,must, and should for obligation in the context of bad manners.They will also do speaking practice by using them for different situations.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson Ss will better able to use have to,must and should for obligation in the context of bad manners.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson Ss will better able to speak by practising have to,must and should in the context of bad manners and different situations.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate the students backround knowledge for bad manners

Teacher shows a Picture on the board and ask Ss what the man is doing in the photo. Then he asks whether they get angry in this situation.Teacher elicits some anwers.

Listening (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the target language in a contex.

Teacher tells the Ss students to listen to 5 different people who get angry beacuse of bad manner and match the speakers with what they say. Ss listen and match the speakers.Then they peer check. Teacher monitors and then gives feedback.

Cntrolled Practice 1 ( meaning ) (8-10 minutes) • To test Ss' knowledge of the target language

Teacher divides the class in to two groups.He gives each group some pieces of papers.From these papers Ss will match the meanings of the sentences that speakers say in the listening text.Ss work in groups.Teacher monitors and then gives feed back.If the Ss can match all the manings correctly.The teachers provides controlled practice 2.If they can not match the meanings. teacher explains the meaning of have to should must,mustn't and don't have to.He asks CCQs to check the meaning.He applies controlled practice 3 first. Some possible CCQs Do you have to wear a uniform in IH Izmir?No Do we have to work on Sundays in Turkey?No Do we use must for personal or general obligations? personal Do I have to wear a shirt and a tie in IH Izmir? What mustn't you do in the cinema? We mustn't talk on the phone/talk with our friend next to us. Do we use should for advice or obligation? advice

Cntrolled Practice 2 ( meaning ) (8-10 minutes) • To give the Ss the oportunity to practise the meaning of modals.

Teacher asks Ss to match the explanations with the example sentences. Ss work alone and then peer check.Teacher monitors and then the he gives the paper with true answers to a student.The student gives the answers to the class.

Cntrolled Practice 3 ( meaning ) (3-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for the Ss to practise the form of TL.

Teacher asks Ss to circle the correct form of the modal verbs in th given sentences.Ss work alone and then peer check. Teacher monitors.Then the teacher provides feedback.

pronunciation (3-5 minutes) • to make the Ss pronounce the modals correctly.

Teacher models especially don't have to and have to and drills the Ss.He writes the modals on the board and shows the Word stress.He does extra drilling exercise if neccessary.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To let the Ss speak in pairs.

The teacher reflects some situations on the board and asks Ss to work in pairs and create modal sentences.Then he nominates one pair to act out the practice on the board.
