Description

In this lesson students will practice speaking for accuracy and fluency in the context of Bank Robber. The class will lead-in with movies about Bank Robbers and Gangster movies. They will discuss the ones they have seen in pairs to activate schemata to get students interested in the class. Grouping is mainly pair work, because the main aim is Speaking. By pair work students will have the most time to practice. After discussing movies, teacher will try to elicit the words Robber and Gangster, check meaning, drill and pronunciation. As a subsidiary aim students will gist listen 3 movie clips to determine with one is which with a matching task. In the next task they will watch one of the movies again and discuss some questions in pairs. As a last task students will read a short text and role-play the characters of the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and discusion in the context of bank robberies.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about robberies in films in the context of bank robberies.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context of Bank Robbers to get Ss interested

T asks 'Have you ever seen these movies' to get students involved and interested. 'Which movies have you seen?' Ss in pairs will discuss the ones they have seen. If they haven't seen any of them they will try to guess what are the movies about.

Pre-Listening (4-7 minutes) • To prepare the Ss for the vocabulary

T will add pictures of bank robbers and gangsters on the board to elicit 'Robber' and 'Gagster'. To Elicit Robber: Who are these men in the pictures? When the word Robber is elicited and the meaning is checked by CCQs T will drill the word. (If word thief is elicited T will make the distinction that, robber threats of the victim by violence, might use force/gun) CCQs: Is it a person? (Yes) Does he take something that belongs to someone else? (Yes) Does he ask nicely to take stuff? (No) Are there any threats to victims involved? (Yes) Do the victims get hurt? (sometimes) T: writes Robber on WB To Elicit Gangster: 'Who are these men in the pictures? When the word Gangster is elicited and the meaning is checked by CCQs T will drill the word. CCQs: Does he commit a crime? (Yes) Does he commit a crime alone? (No) Does he belong to a group? (Yes) T: writes Gangster on WB

Gist Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide Students with gist reading with a semi-controlled tast.

T: 'This handout has the names of the movies with brief descriptions next to them. You are going to watch them and number the descriptions accordingly. I want you to work on this individually.' ICQ: 'If you watch The Italian Job first, you are going to write 1 next to it.' Ss: Check answers with partner. Pairs who finish first will write the answer for w/c FB. T will go ever ant questions

Detailed Listenin (10-12 minutes) • To provide Students with more chllenging detailed listening with a freer tast.

T 'I am going to play The Italian Job again and this time I want you to listen more carefully and try to answer these questions, you can take notes while listening' ICQ: Listen for detail and you can write T will check if Ss need the video to be replayed and act accordingly. T 'Now in pairs check your answers' Ss will discuss their answers. T will hand out answer key, Ss will check the answers in same pairs to keep the class student centered. T will answer questions if needed. No-whole FB

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with a semi-controlled speaking

T will name students A and B and pair them up. T will change the pairings to create variety. T 'Read this text about Bonnie and Clyde in pairs' After Ss finish reading T will hand out A and B dialogs T: I want you to practice speaking this dialog with some role playing. A's will start with their first line, than B's will answer. ICQ: A's read their lines first and B's will answer. After Ss are finished with the practice. T 'I want you to discuss what happens next. Continue your dialogs as A and B. Ss will work in pairs After the task is done there will be a W/C FB
