Description

In this lesson, Ss are going to read for the gist by skimming and match the pictures with different type of holidays. The Ss are going to scan and at the end the Ss are going to do a detailed reading.

Main Aims

  • To improve students' reading skills by practising reading for the gist, scanning and detailed reading in the context of unusual holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be better able to understand the differences between holiday types

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in different types of holidays

Ss discuss about different types of holidays they can come up with in pairs. Ss write the ones they thought of. "Which holidays are unusual?" "Why are they unusual?"

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible to understand the text better through vocabulary

Ss try to guess the words on the ppt. T asks CCQs of the vocabulary.

While-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with gist and specific information reading task.

Ss read the text for the gist for 2 minutes and in pairs they discuss which photo the text match to. Ss match the previously given holiday names on the board by sticking them.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To improve scanning skills of the students in the context of different holidays

Ss stand up with their pairs and read the texts on the walls of the classroom. Ss have a table to tick while walking around and reading in the classroom. Ss discuss in pairs why they have chosen that box. Ss check their answers in groups.

While Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • To read for detail of the texts in the context of unusual holidays

Ss read the given text. Ss discuss and match the paragraphs with the pre-mentioned holidays. The Ss have to explain why they have chosen the picture for the paragraph.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what the students have learnt

Ss discuss in pairs which holiday they think might be interesting and which might not be interesting. They have to explain why they think that way. Their partners will talk about their partners' ideas
