Description

In this lesson students will learn vocabulary related to different countries and read a text about restaurants for gist and details. As a post-reading activity they will complete a writing task and play a guessing game.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • to review vocabulary from previous lesson and introduce topic of restaurants. This will also serve as a pre-reading activity.

T will elicit vocabulary learned in previous lesson through T-S questions. T: I often eat fruit and vegetables. I never eat meat. Ask Ss what they eat and how often. T: I sometimes eat in restaurants. Elicit from Ss how often they eat in restaurants.

Reading for gist (2-4 minutes) • To give Ss a general sense of the text.

Give SS 2 minutes to find the names of the five restaurants on p. 33. They will check in pairs afterwards. T will practice pronunciation of restaurant names with WC.

Pre-teaching vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To teach form and pronunciation of key vocabulary necessary for understanding the text.

T will ask Ss questions to elicit the vocabulary. T: Where are you from? / S: Turkey T: What are you? / S: Turkish T: Where am I from?/ S: Canada T: What am I?/ S: Canadian T will use CCQ to see if Ss understand. T: Are you Canadian?/ S: No, I’m Turkish. Ss listen to recording 1.69 and complete the table (1b) on p. 33 to learn the form and practice the pronunciation. S will do a short “Find some who” activity to find a new partner and review vocabulary. (see attachment 1)

Reading for detail (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading practice

Have SS read text about restaurants on p. 33 and fill in names of restaurants. Check in pairs afterwards. Give SS true or false exercise (see attachment 2) and have them work individually to find answers. Check in pairs when finished.

Post- reading (5-7 minutes) • To get students to use the new vocabulary and sentence structures from the text in a writing activity

Have SS write a few sentences about a restaurant or café they know to practice using some of the sentence structures in the text text such as The Shanghai restaurant is a ….,They have ….,It’s …. (attachment 3) Monitor this activity carefully to help students who may have difficulty with this.

Guessing game. Extra time activity (5-7 minutes) • To review writing activity and practice speaking and listening.

Have Ss read their sentences out loud to the class but don’t say the name. Have other Ss guess the restaurant.
