Description

This language focus lesson is designed to remind the Ss the use of past simple and continuous tenses through speaking and grammar exercises. The activities will aim to make Ss understand the difference between the simple and continuous tenses clearly, to make them speak with these tenses and to point out the pronunciation of some verbs.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of past simple and continuous tenses through speaking and handsheet exercises.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students speak and write by using past simple and continuous tenses

Procedure

re-grouping (2-3 minutes) • To make Ss engage in the classroom environment and to increase interaction among Ss through re-grouping

There will be approximately 25 Ss and they will be divided into 6 groups via a basic game red-green-blue-white-black-yellow groups

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To remind Ss the previous lesson in order to show them past tenses

- T will reflect images of page 18 on the board via ppt. file, draw attention to the tenses used in the previous lesson - T will tell a short story about her morning: "This morning, while I was coming here, I came across with Cem Yilmaz in subway. When I saw him, he was talking and laughing with all the passengers in the train." - T will ask Ss: "What did you do yesterday/ this morning?", "Did you see anything interesting while you were coming here?

Intro to Grammar (6-7 minutes) • To remind Ss how to use past tenses

- T will distribute 1st handout and draw attention to the 1st exercise, give Ss 0.5 min to check it - T will reflect the 1st grammar exercise on the board and ask the Ss come to the board and put arrows, dots, and fill the gaps on the board - T will draw a time chart, and ask for more examples from Ss - T will remind irregular spellings of some -ing forms (eg. planning, dying, etc.) - T will remind the pronunciation of -ed ending (/d/, /t/, /ıd/ )

Practice of Grammar via gap-fill (2-3 minutes) • To provide a practice to Ss in order to make them understand the meaning of tenses

- T will reflect 2nd exercise on the board, draw attention to the 2nd exercise on the sheet - T will give Ss 2 min.s to fill the gaps and to do peer-check - Volunteer Ss will write the right answer on the board

Practice of Grammar via Speaking (2-3 minutes) • To make Ss use the past tenses while speaking

- T will reflect "When/While" page from ppt, and ask Ss to answer these questions via speaking / PW for 2 min.s - While pairs speaking, T will monitor them - Volunteer Ss will write some sentences on the board

Practice of Grammar via Sentence Correction (4-5 minutes) • To make Ss notice the mistakes on tenses

- T will hand the sheets to Ss - T will reflect the exercise on the board - T will give Ss 4 min.s to correct the sentences - GW will take time - Each group will send a volunteer to write the correct answers on the board

Practice of Grammar via imagination (5-7 minutes) • To make Ss use the past tenses while speaking

- T will reflect the 3rd grammar exercise from the first handout - T will ask Ss to work in pairs to complete the sentences (1-2 min.s) - Some Ss will read aloud their examples - T will ask Ss to write a short story starting with one of the sentences (2-3 min.s) - T will monitor them while Ss talking each other

Practice of Grammar via gap-fill (4-6 minutes) • To provide a practice to Ss in order to make them understand the meaning of tenses

- T will reflect grammar ex. p.135 no.1&2 -T will hand new exercises from p.135 - further practice which provides a context for past tense - While fill-gap, GW / PW - Volunteers will write the right answers to the boards

Practice of Grammar via Combining Sentences (5-7 minutes) • To provide a practice to Ss in order to make them understand the meaning of tenses

- T will reflect ex.2 from p.135 - T will draw attention to the hand out - T will explain the example - PW will be applied - Ss will be given 3-4 min.s to answer the questions - Volunteer Ss will write on the board

Practice of Grammar via Speaking (4-6 minutes) • To make Ss use the past tenses while speaking

- T will reflect a story from A.Christie -T will hand the sheets - T will ask Ss read for 1 min. and then answer the 2 questions ---This is a PW - "Try to find answers as many things as you can, use your imagination" -Ss will be given some time to find some answers to Poirot - Volunteer Ss will write some examples on the boards
