Description

In this lesson, the students will be learning how to give and respond to advice correctly using their productive skills. This lesson starts with a discussion about advice. Then it is followed by matching two parts of a sentence in order to make a correct sentence and other activities that would put in practice phrases of advice. Finally, I would be monitoring and correcting their mistakes that they made during the lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for Giving advice in the context of role play.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in an everyday conversation.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • Get them comfortable with the topic of giving advice.

I will refer to the previous lesson and ask them if they remember any advice from the audio they have heard previously and discuss them.

Pre-reading (4-8 minutes) • Familiarize them with giving advice

Students will be given handouts and asked to work in small groups in order to group the dependent clauses to form a sentence.

Functional Language (5-10 minutes) • Prioritizing advice

I will write the strongest to the weakest form of advice on the WB and have the students practice them.

Pre-reading/ pre-speaking (5-10 minutes) • Activate schemata

Students will be given an exercise from an audio script of the previous lesson where there will be some responses of advice. They will be asked to remember what the advice was for those responses.

Practice (3-4 minutes) • Put their knowledge into practice.

The students will be a given a handout where they have to put a sentence into order.

Preparation to speak (5-8 minutes) • Familiarize them with giving advice through role play.

Students will be divided into two groups (A and B) and group A will be given a set of role-cards having problems and group B will be given a set of role-cards having advice. One student (A) will say what her/his problem is and another student (B) will give her/him the appropriate advice.

Practice/ Post-Speaking (2-5 minutes) • Give them more practice using role-play and monitoring them carefully.

If time, students will be divided into two groups (A and B) and group A will be given a set of role-cards having problems and group B will be given a set of role-cards having advice. One student (A) will say what her/his problem is and another student (B) will give her/him the appropriate advice.

Feedback and correction (1-3 minutes) • Give feedback and all the necessary corrections

Through out the lesson I would be listening for mistakes and correcting them in the end.
