Description

In this lesson the students will practice the question form of "Is there, Are there ?" They will review the negative and the positive form of "Is there, Are there?" The sts correlatively practice places in a town or city. They will also practice in listening for specific information.

Main Aims

  • To provide review of negative and positive form of there is/there are and to practice the question form of there is/there are in the context of places in a town or city.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To present and practice vocabulary related to places in a town or city. To give sts practice in listening for specific information.

Procedure

Lead in for Places in a Town (5-7 minutes) • To engage students discuss the pictures and set a context

The teacher will demonstrate some pictures about the places in a town or city. The teacher will ask the sts to discuss the pictures and try to identify what they can see on the pictures. The teacher will try to elicit as much as more possible while they try to say the name of the places. The teacher will give some examples of famous places in order to help the sts.(e.g. Taksim square)

Matching activity for Places in a Town or City (7-10 minutes) • To check their understanding about the places

The teacher will randomly stick the pictures on the left side of the WB. Then the teacher will randomly stick the names of the places on the right side of the WB. The teacher will ask the sts to have a quick look on WB. The teacher will ask the sts to match the names of the places to the pictures. In the case of confussion or missmatching the teacher will ask the sts some question to elicit the correct name of the places.

Listening activity Face to Face Starter Student's Book (R6.5) (8-12 minutes) • To give sts controlled linstening activity

In order to set a context the teacher will demonstrate the picture from Face to Face Starter Student's Book (page 48) The teacher will ask the sts to say what they can see on the picture. The teacher will elicit some information about Susan and Isabel.Then the teacher will randomly stick the words on WB. The teacher will give the instructions that they are going to listen a conversation and put the things in the order they talk about them. The teacher will demonstrate the first example.If it is necessary the teacher will let them to listen again.For FB the teacher will ask the sts to come one by one on WB to put them in order.

Listening activity Face to Face Starter Student's Book (R6.5) (5-8 minutes) • To give sts controlled linstening activity

The will give the sts tha handouts about the listening activity. The sts are supposed to listen again the record 6.5 and try to choose the correct word about Susan. The teacher will get FB.

Gap-fill handout (5-7 minutes) • To check their understanding about the forms of there is/there are

To review the positive and negative form of there is/there are the teacher will write some sentences on WB and ask the students to complete the sentences. After completing this stage the teacher will try to elicit the question form of there is/there are.By checking their understanding the teacher will give the handouts(personally prepared) and ask the sts to work in pairs to fill in the gaps.The teacher will give FB.

Asking and answering questions about their homes. (5-7 minutes) • To give sts controlled speaking activity.

The teacher will give a drawing to each person which include their houses and some places near their houses.The teacher will demonstrate the drawing, give an example and if it is necassary the teacher will write an example on WB. The teacher will ask them to work in pairs and practise Is there/ Are there any.. and give answer with short form Yes/No. Finally the teacher will elicit some ways of giving more informations like "it is five minutes away"
