Description

In this text, ss will learn about using the appropriate form (gerund or infinitive) after certain verbs. Ss will do this using quotes from different celebrities. First, they will learn to detect the forms in the text and then figure out the forms. Later, they will use the form in a controlled practice, followed by a freer speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of gerunds and infinitives in the context of fame and fortune

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking with gerunds and infinitives

Procedure

Warm-up (2-4 minutes) • To get students interested in the subject and introduce the context

T will put the pictures of famous people on the board and ask why they are famous. T will ask questions like, Why are they famous? They make movies so they must make a lot of money, so they must have a fortune? T will elicit "fame and fortune"

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To get students ready for the TL

T will spend a short time eliciting definitions form the students for the words: necessary, recognize, and immortality. T will put ss into pairs to discuss which quote they like best. Afterwards, T will nominate a couple to students to talk about their favorite quote.

Presentation/Grammer (10-15 minutes) • To check ss' knowledge of and to draw attention to TL

Teacher will write a example of a gerund and an infinitive on the board and underline the TL. "Reading helps you learn English" "He wants to learn" T gives the ss the HOs so they can underline the TL in the text. After the ss are done, set Exercise 2 Analysis 1. While students are working, walk around and monitor to gather information for feedback. Give out answer sheet for the first part. And ask CCQs from the LA sheet. Ss will complete the second part and put down answers for the second part on the posters as a whole class.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To check for the grasp of concept

Re-group students and put them into pairs. Set the Practice ex. 1. Monitor and write down which ones they are having trouble with. After they are done, give them the answers. Write the verbs they had trouble with on the board and ask students to guess whether they are followed by a gerund or infinitive.

Speaking Practice (5-8 minutes) • To get students to practice the TL

T will set Practice ex. 2 in pairs. When the T claps, ss will change partners. T will demonstrate the practice first by using two ss.
