In this lesson, students learn about the simple present tense through guided discovery based on a reading text about the families. The lesson starts with a discussion about small and big families. This followed by a reading that has 3 parts about big and small families. Students should read, and match each part with 3 pictures. Finally the lesson ends with some controlled practice in speaking using simple present tense.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with grammar review and practice of simple present in context of small and large families as well as provide with accuracy and fluency speaking practice in steps of a reading that are gist, scan and detailed information in the context of talking about families.

Subsidiary Aims

  •  To provide specific information reading practice Ss scan the text and answer some questions.
  •  To provide deduction speaking practice in lead in for reading show a picture to students, and ask them some question
  •  To provide gist for reading Ss skim the reading, and match each part of reading with 3 pictures.
  •  To provide follow up step and speaking practice by using simple present Ss discuss some questions in some groups.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show a picture and say “Who are they? Do you know them? How many children do they have?” . I ask one or two students “Do you come from a small family or a large family? How many brothers and sisters do you have?; I, after that I want them to answer these questions two by two, and I absolutely do ICQ before they start, and do demo if it is necessary. monitor them during pair work.

Feedback • Do they practice and Can they use correct "simple present" grammar ?

I ask of one or more students and want them to tell about his/her partner’s family. For example "does he/she have a small or big family or How many brothers and sisters does he/she have?" or etc.

Reading for gist (3-4 minutes) • For reading whole the text quickly, and match pictures with each part.

Say: “Read the stories again. Match the stories with the pictures”. Do ICQ for understanding that do student know the task or not? Say:” Check your answers two by two”. Say:” you can see the correct answers on the board, plz check them with your answers”. Say: Do you have any question? Don’t forget to bring your photos!!!!! don't walk a lot.

Reading for Specific information (5-6 minutes) • To provides students with practice in reading for specific information

Tell students: “Read the stories again. For each story, figure out if they are true or false, based on the information in the reading. Do the ICQ as necessary Sit down! Don’t walk Give three students the answer keys. Ask them to come to the front of the classroom. Say: ”They have the answers. Ask them.”

Follow up (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice in speaking and ussing "simple present" grammar and personalization

Say:"Discuss these questions in your group” What kind of family do you have? Who is the youngest child in your family? Who has more children in your relatives? Which family do you prefer to have? Small or large? Why ? How many children do you prefer to have? Do demo. Do ICQ. Divide students in 2 groups. Change some partners. Monitor them. (the main aim is focus on their speaking, and How they use grammar(simple present specially)). Write good and bad sentences. Answer their questions, if they have.

Feedback2 (1-2 minutes) • How they use grammar

Say: “Plz one volunteer of each group stand up, come here(show by gesture), speak about your idea.” Encourage them to speak by moving my head and smiling. Check their speaking.

Post-Reading (1-2 minutes) • To expand on what they've learned

Divide the board to 3 parts. One of them for good sentences One of them for bad sentences One of them for new vocabularies It should be mention: if they have good, bad sentences or new vocabularies, I will write them on the board. Say :”Ask them which of you can correct the sentences?” If nobody isn’t volunteer, I should correct the.
