Teaching Practice 4: Extend Your Vocabulary
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the Ss are going to listen to an audio, explaining what the terms 'malapropism' and 'spoonerism' mean. First they will complete a gap-fill the related exercise and then focus on form. Finally, there will be controlled and free speaking practice of the forms in the context of suffix "-ism".

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice in the context of Malapropisms and Spoonerisms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary.

Procedure

Lead-in/Presentation/Focus on Meaning (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and and engage the Ss

The T starts the lesson with several spoonerism examples in Turkish. After these examples, the Ss listen to an audio recording and try to find similar examples in English.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a recording and pre-teach vocabulary.

The T writes the examples on the board and demonstrates and delivers ICQs. Afterwards, the T plays the audio again so as to the Ss can listen for detail and find mispronunciations. The answers are already given, they are on the backs of the chairs.

Highlighting of Vocab and Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To draw the Ss' attention to the forms, then clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language.

The T delivers handouts and waits for the Ss to finish in a couple of minutes. Then, the T plays the relevant audio recording and the Ss check their answers.

Exposure (10-15 minutes) • To provide broader knowledge for the suffix "-ism"

The T explains where/how the suffix "-ism" is used by giving examples on the board. This will be followed by a gap-fill activity.

Semi-controlled practice/Personalisation/Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide the Ss with semi-controlled and free practice of the target language

The Ss are asked to stand up and move around, start randomly speaking to one another, telling their own ideas by using relevant vocab and forms.
