Agreement and disagreement

Description

In this lesson the students will revise phrases that express for own opinions and someone else's opinions. First, they will complete a matching activity about expressing opinions then there will be an open discussion about how to gradually agree and disagree with different points of view. This will be followed be a variety of activities that will improve students fluency. Finally, there will be a controlled discussion including asking and answering questions about the expressing agreement and disagreement with reference to reasons that support each point of view.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson the learners will have reviewed and practiced language for expressing opinions and agreeing/disagreeing.They will have also practiced asking questions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice making questions and focus on the stress in some opinion phrases.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead –in (3-5 minutes) • Quick review on the previous lesson

Review the way of asking questions individually. A sentence will be given and the learners will be asked to make a question Learners will be asked to correct the questions

Function Presentation/review: (10-12 minutes) • To practise where to put stress on certain phrases and also learn how to express their opinions.

Demonstrate phrases that is used to express hesitation, own opinion and someone else's opinion. The learners' attention will be focused on the stressed part of each phrase. Cut-up phrases Give instructions very clearly and ask students to work in small groups. Students match these phrases. Then, learners will categorize the expressions according to meaning. Drilling will be used and ICQS as well. Feedback through giving them answer key Clear instructions will be given Learners will be asked to go to the board one by one to complete a table.

Function review2: (10-12 minutes) • Getting the learners interested in the topic and teach them how to express agreeing/disagreeing.

Demonstrate phrases for agreeing/disagreeing. CCQS will be used. Some phrases will be elicited from the learners. A scale from 1 to 5 will be put on the board and learners will be asked to match. Quick feedback on the board. Learners will be shown a variety of aces and will be asked to say what each expresses for. Clear instructions will be given as well as ICQS. Learners will play a game of hats. Feedback will be on the spot.

Preparation: (10-13 minutes) • Learners practise expressing how much they agree/disagree

"The information age" topic will be set . Clear instructions and ICQS. Learners will be asked to read each opinion and respond to it and choose a scale from 1 to 5 according to their personal opinion. They will check their answers in pairs.

Speaking: (15-20 minutes) • Further speaking practise

Model a phrase to let them know how to justify their opinions. CCQS will be used. They will be given 10 minutes to think how to justify their opinion on some statements. There will be a model again to help them how to ask questions to get specific information. The model will be written on the board. Learners will be asked to practice conversations in groups . They will express for their opinions , justifying it and asking their peers about their opinions and ask them to justify it. Feedback and error correct will be on the spot.
