Main Aims

  • To make students comprehend contable-uncountable nouns and quantifiers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make students gain the related vocabulary within the context of food.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T refers to the previous lesson and asks Ss if they know anything about food facts. She tells one of her friends have been to a dietician and the dietician suggested a diet that sounds quite weird. She talks about the diet and asks Ss if they have ever been on a diet. T sets the paired-up conversation. Ss talk about the tips for a balanced diet. (2 min.)

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T gives HOs and sets a time limit. She tells here are some ideas that may be helpful for a healty, balanced diet but they need to fill in the gaps before they learn about them. T sets a time limit to complete the exercise (4 min) and then compare their ansers with their friends(2min). Ss should give reasons while comparing their answers. T monitors and takes notes of the common mistakes. Ss listen to the audio to check their answers.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T reflects the first two items of quantifiers WS on the board and tells Ss to stand up and make a circle. They play ball game. T tells Ss the aim of the game is to learn about countable/uncountable nouns. First T tells the the first noun on the board, whether it's countable or uncountable and throws the ball by saying one student's name. The student should tell the second noun, whether its countable or uncountable and throws the ball to another student. This continues yntil they say all the nouns on the board. T puts an exclamation mark next to words that Ss do wrong and they go over these words in the second round. T gives immediate feedback in the first round if there is any inconsistencies with Ss' answers. They go on playing the same game in the second item, this time to decide which quantifiers are used with countable nouns, which with uncountable and which are used with both. T gives example sentences whenever needed. If time allows They can play it for a second round, this time to examples, using quantifiers on the board. T thanks Ss and ask them to sit down. T gives the HOs, the one reflected on the board and she sets the paired work and asks Ss to do third exercise with their partners. When they finish. When they finish they check the answers as a whole class. Not all quantifiers are given this exercise. By checking her notes she takes during the monitoring stages, T will teach the quantifiers that Ss have problems with. T gives language notes at the end and tells Ss they can benefit from it if they have any problems.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T tells Ss to to go back to the first HO. T points to second exercise and checks if there are any unknown words. T teaches unknown words by drawing or telling how and where these things are used. She asks Ss to complete the exercise in pairwork. She sets a time limit (5 min.). When everybody finishes, they check the answers as a whole class.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T writes the following sentences on the board "What do you need for a perfect picnic?", "What do you need for perfect party?", "What do you need to put in a small suitcase for a perfect week's beach holiday?". She tells Ss to pick one of the topics and share their opinions with their partners. T demos to encourage Ss to use quantifiers. T monitors, takes notes of some mistakes and gives delayed feedback. If time allows Ss wii be asked to write 5 sentences with the help of the boxes exercise 1. If not, it will be given as HW.
