Description

In the lesson I will focus I on listing and speaking through guided discovery. The Ss practice different methods of note taking while listening to an audio track, and doing multiplayer PW and GW to help practice the TL.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice on specific information and listening practice using an audio track about Maria Montessori in the context of biographical notes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the process of writing practice in the context of biographical notes

Procedure

Name activity (2-3 minutes) • Learn students name

In the last lesson I had the students write their name down on a piece of paper and return it to me at the end of the lesson. I will pass these papers to the students while trying to remember which name goes to which person. If there are any new students I will have them write their name down as the students did in our previous lesson.

Warm-Up (5-7 minutes) • Introduce Main Topic

I will ask the Ss if taking notes is an important skill to have, and if they think they are good note takers. I will then tell the students that note taking is the main focus of our lesson. They will learn different ways to help them take notes to focus on key points of English while reading and listening. Now I will pair Ss then handout the first worksheet and tell the students to answer the 3 questions at the top right of the HO. After they have completed the Q's I will ask 2 following questions to the WC, one being, What kind of people are good Note Takers? Secondly, What other things might be good or help take notes?

Presentation (8-10 minutes) • Writing Practice

I will ask the Ss if they know the women in the picture?, if anyone does I will have them tell us about her. If not I will read the excerpt about her below the picture. Then ask the students what her job was. Then tell the Ss we will listen to a recording about her in a few minutes. Next I will re-pair Ss, and tell them to complete Q 3a with their partner. I will explain to the Ss they need to mark each sentence with the correct Letter. They have 5 min to complete. I'll do the first question as a class on the WB. Once the time allotted is finished I will have the class mingle for 2 min comparing answers. When Ss return to their seats I will ask the them if there were any that they had trouble with. If the activity was a little to difficult for them I will pass around a answer key.. For the last part of this activity I will tell the Ss answer the questions in part B as a WC, if any student has a idea they want to share I will ask them to explain or possibly demonstrate their techniques on the WB.

Listening (17-20 minutes) • focus on detail

The Ss will listen to an audio track about Maria Montessori, tell the students that they need to focus on listening for detail, and take notes as best they can. Tell them it may seem difficult but that I will play the recording more than once. Tell that that trying to implement the techniques the learned about it the previous activity will help with this if they can. I will give them 1 min or 2 to read their notes and alter them if necessary. Have the Ss swap notes with their partner and see if they had less or more information, ask the Ss if they found the techniques useful and if the notes were good, or could be better.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • productive skill check

For the Ss last activity I will put them in 4 separate groups, group names will be, Asterix, bullet points, underlines, and quotations. I will tell the groups to complete the final task on the page. They will use their notes to complete the first question, which each group will discuss with the WC, then I will monitor and help the groups speaking while they are completing the final question in task 5, they will do this through the end of the class.
