Description

In this lesson ss will discover vocabulary related to events and celebrations. They will have the chance to discuss their opinions on events and celebrations of their choice. They will then go on to learn how to use extreme adjectives with intensifiers. In the end, ss will be using them in a gap-fill exercise and a situational speech exercise.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of relevant vocabulary in the context of events and celebrations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency in the context of intensifiers and extreme adjectives

Procedure

Warm-up (3-5 minutes) • To get ss to think about various events and celebrations

Write the title "EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS" on the board. Ask ss how many they can think of in 1 min. Write them on the board. Hang up all the pictures and ask them what they are.

Lead-in /presentation (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary and elicit ideas about celebrations and events

Put ss into 3 groups and hand out the "phrases with pictures" Ask ss to stick them next to the pictures that they find most relevant. Ask ss to sit down and show them a few of the pictures with opposites and ask them which one goes with which picture more. Ask them why.

Speaking Practice (3-5 minutes) • To get ss to recall relevant vocab about events and celebrations

Put students into pairs Ex 3 Hand out Qs from pg. 139. Before handing out the Qs, tell students to get a good look at the pictures. Tell ss to turn over their sheets and look at the questions. Tell them to write the answers next to the Qs. Quickly go over answers as a whole class. If there is enough time, do ex 4.

Presentation (7-8 minutes) • To introduce the intensifier very and extreme adjectives

Get students to do ex. 1 on pg. 73 in pairs. Check answers, while drawing the chart on the board. Explain and ask questions as you go.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To get ss to practice extreme adjectives by filling in the blanks in relevant sentences

If you have time, regroup into pairs. Tell students to do ex. 3. Tell them they can use the board to cheat. Check answers with WC.

Wrap-up/Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To reinforce learned vocabulary and to get ss to practice speech production with intensifiers extreme adjectives.

Show selected picture and create a sentence to demonstrate. Show more pictures and ask ss to create sentences with intensifiers and adjectives
