Description

In this lesson, students will be concentrating on reading skills and vocabulary in the context of sport. Students will also practice their speaking skills in the context of sport. The class will begin by activating the students schemata followed by a pre-vocabulary teaching stage. Ss will have a reading for gist task and a scan reading task. After that they will have a controlled practice activity followed by a speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide students with a reading practice and develop their gist and scan reading sub - skills in the context of sport.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To intoduce students to vocabulary related to sport.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. sits down on a chair and asks Ss some lead - in questions. After that the T asks if the Ss like sport. The T shares with the Ss what kind of sports she likes and dislikes. Then the T asks the Ss to work in pairs and to talk about what kind of sports they like and don't like.Ss talk between each other and the T monitors.

Pre-Reading/Listening (12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The T. shows the Ss some pictures on power point and elicits the words in english.After that the teacher drills with the class and shows the form of the word The T. asks CCQ. For example Ss guessed the word "tennis court" and T. asks the Ss "Why we go to the tennis court?". The answer is "to play tennis" This repeats with every new word that the T shows on the WB.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task.

For this task the T put the Ss in three groups and gives them five cards with titles. Each group gets its cards in different colour. T explains that students will work with three texts and they have to match each text with the correct title. T. puts the texts on the wall. Each group will have 2 minutes to match the texts and the titles. The Ss have two titles that they don't need to use. After that the T asks the students to discuss with the other group their answers. The T writes the answers on the board.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9 minutes) • To provide students with a scan reading practice and controlled practice (gaps fill in)

T. gives the Ss seven words. Ss have to find and circle these words in the texts. Ss work individually. T. monitors their work. After that Ss check with their partner. T. gives the answers. After that the T. gives the Ss a gap fill controlled practice. The Ss should fill in the gaps with the same words they've circled. Ss work in pairs for this activity. After that they check their answers with the other pairs.T asks Ss to come to the board and write the answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice speaking skills and exercise the TL.

Ss will work in pairs. First the T puts them in two groups. Group A and group B . The Ss in each group will get a text. The T. shows the Ss questions about the two texts. Each group have to answer the questions about their text. T. checks Ss answers with the WC. After that each S from group A is paired with a student from group B and they tell each other about their text. T. monitors the Ss.

If time left Ss will play the game : ''Find a student who likes....?'' T. writes questions about different sports on the WB and the names of the Ss and they have to do the same on a list of paper. Then Ss walk around the class and ask each other questions.
