Description

In this lesson, students practuce productive skills through writing e-mails to each other. The lesson starts with the revising the rules of spelling present participles and correcting mistakes in the text. This is followed by the gist reading and scanning the e-mail. Finally, students are supposed to write e-mails to each other containing invitations to go out.

Materials

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T elicits a story about a lady who doesn't have a phone and has to write e-mails in order to get in touch with her friends.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To familiarize students with the spelling rules of present participles

T elisits the spelling rules of present participles. This is followed by a controlled activity where the students in pairs are supposed to correct mistakes in the text.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks through reading an e-mail

The students skim an e-mail. They are supposed to find out who wrote the message and what the author wanted. The students are asked to find mistakes in the text and correct them (2 mistakes on misspelling present participles). This is followed by a pairwork when students need to find pieces of specific information in the competitive way. Then T introduces the TL by eliciting words and expressions which are required to write an e-mail.

Productive Task(s) - writing an e-mail to friends (11-13 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills (writing)

Sts randomly choose penpals to write an e-mail to. T sets the aim to invite a friend to go out by means of writing an e-mail and elicits the TL. Students choose the place they would like to go out with their penpals and write a short message containing invitation

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students exchange the e-mails. Peer-checking is conducted. After that the students respond the e-mail by accepting and declining the invitation
