Materials

Abc Handout Preparation: Listening&Speaking

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice through conversation in the context of achievements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information and listening practice using a text about achievements.

Procedure

Name activity (1-2 minutes) • Learn students name

I will have Ss write their name on a piece of paper, at the end of the L, I will keep these papers and try to give them to the correct person in the next L I teach.

Warm-Up (4-5 minutes) • Introduce them to to relevant vocabulary and information about the subject matter.

I will give the Ss a HO related to our main focus of the L. Using (ICQ's) the Ss will understand they need to fold the paper to hide the text so they can only see the pictures. Using the pictures I will introduce the Ss to our topic for the L and I will elicit some vocabulary around achievements.

Lead-In (8-10 minutes) • Practice using vocabulary they will need later in The L.

I will pair the students in preparation for the activity. Ss will unfold there HO's revealing Task 1. I will do the first Question with the Ss, asking 2 or 3 to come up with another answer other than the example. Ss will then complete Task 1 in their pairs. After allowing sufficient time to finish the task they will walk around the class comparing answers and changing their own if they like another answer better. Ss will then return to their seats and we will compare answers with the class, also learning if some achievements are the work of one person and which are collective human achievements.

Listening for detail (7-10 minutes) • Activate Ss listening skills and understanding the TL

Firstly Ss will read the Q's in Task 3, Individually they will complete these Q's as I play the audio for this task (audio T5.2). Before the audio I will tell the students there is no need to write full sentences, just a simple answer will be fine. Using (ICQ's) to confirm understanding. Once the audio is complete I will use PW for the students to check the answers as I play the audio again, this time pausing after each speaker.

Speaking (13-15 minutes) • Increase fluency and accuracy in the Ss TL

in this activity the Ss will talk about an achievement they've found particularly amazing. While in the same pairs I will give them 1min to think of either a new idea or one from the previous activity (Task 1), it can also be someone they personally know rather than someone famous to discuss in their pairs. I will give them 7 - 10 mins coming up with what they want to say. While they are thinking of what to talk about I will have written the Useful Language from the Task on the WB. After about 5 mins I will refer them to the useful language at the bottom of their page to help them with useful phrases and encourage them to use this in their story. When everyone has completed their story the Ss will jump from pair to pair so everyone hears all the stories in the L. While the students are listening to each other's stories I will encourage them to ask further questions about the achievements.

Wrap up (3-5 minutes) • End L with a speaking activity

Lastly 2 or 3 Ss will share with the class which story the found the most interesting and why.
