Subsidiary Aims

  • To review the topic of negative present simple tense.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To introduce the topic of New Year's and engage students in the lesson.

Show a set of pictures related to New Year's celebration and try the elicit the topic of the lesson from the students.

Pre-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by pre-teaching vocabulary.

Use the OHP to display photos of the three types of calendars from the text (Chinese, Gregorian, Indian) and get the students to guess which types of calendar they represent. Review the text and choose any words that might be difficult for the students to understand. Pre-teach the vocabulary by eliciting from the students the words you want to cover. Use CCQ to make sure the students have understood the meaning of the vocabulary. Highlight the meaning of the words using choral drilling and then put them on the board.

While-Reading #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging skim reading task and set the tone for the next reading activity.

Give the ss the text face down and tell them they will have only one minute to find the answers to the questions from the exercise 1. ICQ to make sure they understood the activity "Are you going to look at the text?" "How many minutes do you have to read the text?" Give a clear start and stop signal. Have the students check their answers in pairs and then do a WC FB.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for detail task.

Tell the students that they have 5 minutes to read the text again and answer the questions from Exercise 2. Tell the students to check their answers in pairs and then do a WC FB.

Post-Reading (12-14 minutes) • To introduce the topic of negative present simple and and get the students to produce simple guided sentences to talk about themselves.

Put four sentence prompts on the board to introduce the negative present simple. "The Gregorian calendar uses the sun" The Islamic calendar doesn't use the sun." "The Gregorian calendar begins on 1 January" "The Indian year doesn't begin in January". Elicit the present simple in the positive and negative form from the students. Check the understanding with a few CCQ questions."What is the difference between the two sentences?" "What do the sentences tell us?" Elicit the form and the grammatical properties from the students and put them on the board. Elicit the contractions from the students and work on the pronunciation through choral drilling. Divide the students into pairs and have them do a controlled practice on topic with Exercise 3. Have them check the answers in pairs and do a quick WC FB by putting the answers on the board. Follow up with a semi-controlled speaking. Give the students Exercise 4 HO and tell them to fill in the gaps in order to make the sentences true about them. Ask the students to stand up and find a pair. Then their share the sentences with their partner. If the time allows, they can change partners.
