Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of sports in the context of popular sports in countries

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role play in the context of popular sports in countries

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts his speech with telling the Ss that they will learn the sports' names and that's why they will play a lot. T divides the class into two groups. It doesn't matter if one group has more student as we sometimes have an odd number of Ss. T makes two lines of the two groups and shows his ppt. and Ss try to say the sports' names on the screen. Pictures are covered each time they become a little more visible so that they can guess. Each time the winner has one point for her group.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T reminds about his Erasmus program friends and tells that he had a chat with them on sports. He says I asked them which sports are popular in their countries and follows with his first friend. He shows her countries flag and wants students to tell the country. And then he tells what he asked and shows the pictures to class in order to let them tell him. After that he shows the names of those sports in each created person's ppt page.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T makes a quick exercice with Ss and gives a Ho. The Ss fill in the gaps according to the sports' pictures by themselves. T makes a pair check right after the time given for this part of the lesson.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T, to clarify the meaning puts the little pictures of the sports on a desk and makes an example of the activity. He takes one paper and act outs so that Ss can guess which sports is he doing. T wants meaning process more interactive rather than a T centered activity. So after modeling first example, he has Ss come and act out each sport. In the pronunciation time, T makes a lot of drills and repetitions. As the Ss are beginners they need a lot of exposure to the language. And T also needs to be an oral model. In the form practice, T writes down the words and indicates the stress points. He again makes lots of repetitions.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss play a hit game on the stage. Each group sends one of their members and they try to grab the object in the middle and tell the sports which teacher shows from ppt. T asks the TL question (Which sports are popular in xxxx? and shows 2 pictures. The one who grabs first the object has the right to tell the answer. If s/he gives a wrong answer then other group gets the chance to tell.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T divides the class into two and has 4 students to seat separately in the corners of the classroom. T makes each of them a country. The rest of the Ss gets an info-gap box to fill in. In order to fill in they need to ask 4 sitting Ss using their TL and gets the answers.
