Telling the time
A2 Elementary level

Description

In this lesson my main aim will be "Telling the time". I will use a real clock to elicit the topic. I will give students some exercises about digital and analog clocks but I will not mention about the hands of the clock. I will try to give a basic idea about time and clocks. I will teach some different ways of telling the time. Finally they will learn how to tell the time in different ways.

Materials

Abc Group work. We can say the time in different ways.
Abc Talking about the time
Abc Put the words in order.
Abc Work in pairs Look at the photo A-F.
Abc Match times to photos A-F
Abc Write the times as groups

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of language used for telling the time, asking the time.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of time words and numbers

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson and engage students

I will show my personal watch and then I will ask them " Who has got a watch?". They will reply with Have/has got sentences so it will be a short revision of the previous topic. After that I wil draw a clock on the board with an easy time then I will ask them what the time is?

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the TL by putting the words in order

The learners will complete the task by putting the words in order. They will first check whether they understand the words in the box. They listen to me while I am describing the words. After listening to me they will check their answers in pairs.

Practice 1 (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Working in pairs, the learners will discuss the photos of the clocks. They will check their answers in pairs before feedback. There will be a whole class feedback about what the students think the photos belong to.

Practice 2 (5-7 minutes) • To practice the different ways of telling the time

Working in groups learners match the times with the correct photos. They will check other groups' works. Then as a group they will discuss how to say times in a different way.

Presentation of the TL (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and prononciation of the TL

The students will individually complete first activity. They have to fill in the gaps. After peer feedback, the learners will check their answers with the teacher.

Semi-controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To accept check further and prepare students for free practice

The learners will write times to the photos of the clocks. They will work in groups. Each group will check other's work at the end. Finally,teacher will give a short feedback.

Freer Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provde students with free practice of the target language

The learners will ask and answer questions to find out what the time is? I will give them some hand outs. They will use these HOs to prepare a dialogue. Then they will act it out. Errors will be noted for feedback in the final stage.

Deferred Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify any learners' mistakes from the previous freer speaking activity

Teacher will record some anonymous learners's mistake on the whiteboard. The learners will correct the mistakes with guidance.
