In this lesson, Ss will be introduced to the topic of "preventable diseases" through a reading text. Before the reading part, they will get familiar with the vocabulary and the adjectives with the suffix -able. Throughout the reading section, they will do more discussions, even a debate, and will improve their ability to deduce meaning from the context.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist, detail and in deducing meaning from context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To raise Ss' awareness of and give practice in adjectives ending in suffix -able through the context of prevetanble diseases. To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency through a discussion.


Warm-Up (5-10 minutes) • To engage students and set a context

First, there will be a discussion over a picture and a newspaper headline so as to introduce the Ss to the general topic of the lesson. With the headline, they will remember the adjectives with the suffix -able. So, after reviewing "preventable", I will give the HO I have prepared so that they can recall the other similar adjectives. After that, with a video of 29 secs, their awaresness of the vocabulary of the context will raise. As a result, they will feel more comfortable with the topic in the following exercises.

Vocabulary Exercise (5-7 minutes) • To remind the students a grammar topic that they have seen before

Since they have already seen the meanings of the adjectives in the exercise given with the Vocabulary HO, they will easily find the collocations of the adjectives (eg. a suitable present) To check their understanding, they will do an extra exercise from the WB. I will ask further questions by using those adjectives so as to increase their understanding and improve their speaking.

Pre-reading section (5-7 minutes) • To prepare the students for reading text

They will read the text for gist and we will discuss the text, the title and sub-titles before reading it thoroughly. Also, in order to give some idea about some of the technical words of illness, we will do a short gap-filling activity on the board. Then, to make the reading text easier for the Ss, I will write 8 words I've chosen on the board and expect them to guess their part of speech. Afterwards, I will make sure those words have been well-understood.

While Reading Section (5-10 minutes) • To engage students with the reading text for details

In this part, they will read the text for details and specific information. So, we will decipher the text. While doing this, we will be doing some vocabulary and understanding the meaning exercises.

Post-Reading Section (5-10 minutes) • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency

We will be doing a debate related to the topic of the course.
