3 - Getting lost

Description

In this lesson, students are introduced to the topic of asking for directions.based on a listening and speaking activities. The lesson starts with an eliciting a story about a lost man. This is followed by a short reading activity and a gist listening. The lesson also includes some vocabulary activities to review students' schemata and familiarize with new vocabulary.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of places in the town
  • To provide gist and scanning listening practice using a text about asking directions in the context of places in the town

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To revise previously taught vocabulary

T divides Sts into two teams and lines them up in front of the WB. T conducts the 'snapping game' - Sts are supposed to snap the word (vocabulary from the previous lesson) which corresponds to its definition.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide interest and motivation for the lesson and establish the context

T elicits a story about a sad man who accidentally found himself in Newcastle upon Tyne

The task (getting lost in Newcastle upon Tyne) (7-9 minutes) • To activate schemata

Students in groups discuss what they might know or guess about Newcastle. T elicits ideas about its size, population, nightlife, popular sports etc. Sts fulfill the table about features they know and do not know about this city.

Presentation of new vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To introduce the TL

Sts are given HO 1. Within 1 min they read the short text about Newcastle, compare the facts with their ideas written on WB. T conducts FB. Sts match the places with the map of Newcastle. T checks pronounciation of new words, drills if necessary, practice word stress.

Listening (10-12 minutes) • To listen for gist and specific details

T continues the story about the Sad man lost in Newcastle. Sts listen for gist. This is followed by a short WCFB. Sts given HO 3. They listen to the audio again (listening for specific information) and tick the places girls had been. T conducts short FB.

Summary (1-2 minutes) • To provide short FB on TL

T conducts brief WCFB.
