Description

In this lesson, the learners will read about London. They will use the text as a model to talk about some thing important to them.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about London in the context of a blog.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of verb to be and personal pronouns in the context of a text about London.
  • To provide practice of adjectives of description in the context of London and Istanbul.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the learners some pictures of London and ask them to use the given headings to label them. I will also find out if they know anything else about London.

Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible by providing useful vocabulary practice.

The learners will complete several sentences about London using adjectives from a box. They will then use the same words to describe Istanbul.

Gist reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task.

The learners will read the blog quickly (1 minutes) to decide where it comes from and what it is. They will check their answers in pairs before whole class feedback is received.

Reading for detail. (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task.

The students will read the text again and decide if ten sentences are true or false: any false statements will be corrected. They will check their answers in pairs before whole class feedback is received.

Post-Reading Task 1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned. To also revise language from the previous lesson.

The learners will complete several questions about Annalisa. They will then ask and answer the questions in pairs and record the answers. Feedback will be received.

Post-Reading Task 2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills.

The learners will describe something important to themselves to their partner. They will have time to prepare before speaking. The teacher will make a note of any errors.
