Description

In this lesson, students practise skills of reading for gist, detail and specific information in the context of "shops" by several different types of activities like predicting, matching and games with pictures.

Main Aims

  • To develop Ss skills of reading for gist, detail and specific information in the context of different kinds of shops.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to understand vocabulary items related to shops and adjectives describing shops.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* T. talks about a small shop while showing some pictures fitting the description, "The shop near my house is very small (picture of a small shop) but there are lots of things to buy: Food, drinks, chocolate, milk, bread, etc. (picture of them). I go there for shopping everyday. (Monday, Tuesday, Wed...). * T. asks "Which shop is it?" * T. shows 4 pictures. * Ss guess which one.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

* Ss make predictions about which half texts describe which shops' pictures and match them. * Pre-teach Vocabulary T. shows the pictures of adjectives. T. ECDW.

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist tasks

* T. asks Ss to read the text quickly and choose the best title. * Ss chooses the best title for the text after reading it quickly. * Ss work in pairs and compare their answers. * T. FB

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading for specific information task

* T. asks Ss to read the text and underline the adjectives. * While Ss working on it, T. leaves the answer key as cards face down on their desks. * After Ss finish underlining, they take their cards and stick them on the adjectives in the text which is projected on the board. * Ss check their answers. * T. FB

Post-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* Vocabulary FB - Controlled Practice T. gives HO of "opposite adjectives" practice activity. Ss work individually, then check with their partners. They come and write the answers on the board. T FB, makes M, PRON and F clear. * T gives HO of "adjectives you can use to describe nouns". Ss work on it. Check with their partner. T. FB * Writing and Speaking - Production T models a story describing a well-known shop in Bursa. Ss guess which shop it is. Ss think about a shop, as pairs choose a shop and write adjectives to describe it. Ss read out and other Ss guess the name of the shop.

Back-up (3-5 minutes) • to FB

Ss individually write a short description about a shop and read it.
