  • To practice reading for the gist and detailed comprehension of a story about schools abroad

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose learners to vocabulary related to education required for the reading text

Procedure

Lead - in (part 1) (4-5 minutes) • To energise Ss

T sets the context of "school memories" and energises Ss by reviewing previos day's lessons with a game. T puts the key information cards (intersted in, afraid of, good at, etc.) facing down on the floor and asks Ss to make a cricle around the cards. T elicits the word "ticket" ( the piece of paper to travel by bus? ). T introduces the cards on the floor as " the tickets back to school years". T introduces the the ball as a " time travel ball ". T adresses a S to turn a ticket over ( eg: interested in). T models: makes a true statement ( I was interested in Music), throws the ball to a student and asks " What about you?". Ss throw the ball each other and keep asking/answering until T claps and asks a S to turn another ticket over change the adjective

Lead - in (part 2) (3-5 minutes) • To engage Ss

T asks Ss to disscuss the questions in pairs ( Are there any big differences between the schools in your town? Are some schools better than others? If so why? What is your idea of a good school?) Ss share their ideas and T conducts FB

Pre - reading (8-10 minutes) • To pre- teach vocabulary

T shows the PPT and tries to elicit the education vocabulary (age, certificate, compulsory, punishment, results, sex, system). T groups Ss in pairs T presents blue paper for " differences", orange paper for " similarities T checks instructions (Blue paper for ? Orange paper for ?) T asks Ss to disscuss the statements, find the similarites/differences between England and Turkey, and put the statements on the correct paper T checks instructions ( Are we writing the senteces? ) T delivers statements about England education system to each pair

While reading part 1 (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading for the gist

T puts the headings (1. Rich and poor, boys and girls 2. A success story 3.School subjects 4. Traditional teaching) on the board. T gets Ss to disscuss what they think each one means in relation to a story about education. T gets Ss predict the kinds of things they might read about. T gives instructions about the task ( Read the paragraphs quickly, match the headings and paragraphs, you have only 2 min.) T checks instructions ( Are we reading all the details slowly?, How many minutes do you have?) T distributes the reading text. Ss to skim the paragraphs and match them to appropriate headings

While reading (part 2) (13-15 minutes) • To practice detailed comprehension of the text

T prepares cut - up slips of paper containing the statements on SB p 19,ex.2 ( one sentence per slip of paper) and puts them on the walls around the room. T describes a pencil and glasses by miming and asks about their functions. T groups the Ss in pairs. Names the Ss as glasses and pencils. T gives instructions: Glasses locate a slip of paper, read it, go back to desk and dictate the sentence to the Pencils. Pencils write the sentence word by word. T checks instructions (Is everyone walking in the room? What are glasses doing? Who are the Glasses? Who is writing? Are we taking short notes or writing every word?). T explains the next step. When the pairs finish their sentence, they should search the reading text for some information matches, write it and show it to T. If it's correct Ss swich the roles and move on the next statement. If it's not right, Ss re-read and try again. T checks instructions ( What happens when you complete your sentence? Do you move on or show it to me ? If it's right? If it's wrong?). Earlier pair is the winner !

Post - reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide spoken fluency practice by exploring the topic of the text further
