Neighbors

Description

In this lesson students learn how to read for general ideas and specific details through a reading on some celebrities as neighbors. In addition, they learn how to ask some questions and discuss ideas about their neighbors. The lesson starts with a presentation of the topic by showing a drawing and some questions. This is followed by a discussion between pairs, where students talk about their neighbors. After that, new words in the passage are explained through PowerPoint slides and a matching exercise. Next,The students read the passage and answer questions about the passage. Finally, they get some time to practice speaking by talking about which celebrities they would like as neighbors.

Procedure

Warm-up (3-5 minutes) • To review family vocabulary and raise the energy level

T holds three small boxes that contain different slips of paper. T goes round the class and asks sts to take a slip from each box then form a sentence using the slips. Sts read their sentences out loud. T asks sts to match the bits to make sensible sentences by exchanging their bits with other sts. T elicits the topic of the lesson by asking sts to guess which sentence is about today's topic.

Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson, review using auxiliaries in questions, and have students talk about their neighbors

T displays a drawing of himself and his neighbors with questions that have no auxiliaries. T elicits the auxiliaries. Sts ask the questions to T. T answers sts' questions to demonstrate the task. Sts discuss the questions about their own neighbors in pairs. T gets feedback from individual sts.by asking them about their partners.

Learners discuss their ideas about good and bad neighbors (5-7 minutes) • To provide spoken fluency practice and to activate prior knowledge about the topic of the text.

T displays the slide which has pictures of neighbors and the two sentence stems, "Good neighbors are people who...", and " Bad neighbors are people who..". T displays some prompts for weaker sts. Sts discuss in pairs. T gets feedback about the prompts and elicits other ideas.

Introducing New Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To familiarize sts with vocabulary from the reading

T shows sts slides of pictures and elicits the words. If sts do not know the word, T gives the words and drills WC or T-S.. T distributes handouts containing a matching exercise on the vocabulary. Sts complete the task individually then check in pairs. T conducts WCFB.

Reading for ideas and details (12-15 minutes) • To practice finding general ideas and specific details in the reading

T shows students the pictures of Turkish celebrities and asks, " Who would you like to be you neighbor and why?" Sts discuss in pairs. T gets feedback from sts about their partners. T distributes handouts containing the passage. T distributes groups of students 6 slips of paper about ex1.Sts put the information in the correct order in groups of three. Groups check with other groups. T conducts WCFB. T distributes ex2.Sts complete individually then check with partners. T conducts WCFB.

Learners discuss who they want to have as their neighbor celebrity (2-4 minutes) • To provide opportunities for sts to practice the language further

T displays a slide containing the pictures of the celebrities in the passage. Sts discuss who they want to be their neighbors and why. T gets feedback from individual sts if there is time.

Energizer (7-up game) (3-5 minutes) • To raise the energy of students again as they are not going to have a break and to use any extra time in case the other activities were finished earlier than expected.

T has sts form a circle. T explains the game by demonstrating it. Sts play the game.
