Description

This lesson is dedicated to newspaper advertisements (names and details). Students learn to understand instructions, numbers and pieces of information.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide integrated reading and listening skills practice on the topic of making contact

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about telephone calls
  • To provide review and practice in the context of neighbours and neighbourhoods
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about advertisements

Procedure

Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To expand the topic of 'neighbourhood'

1. T elicits the word 'neighbourhood'. 2. T tells about her neighbours and events that happen in her neighbourhood. 3. Sts in pairs tell each other about their neighbours. 4. T provides short FB by asking random Sts about stories they heard from classmates.

Reading (9-12 minutes) • To develop reading skills

1. Sts are divided into 2 groups. They are given HO 1. T asks what they can see (trying to elicit the word 'advertisement'). 2. Sts sort advertisements into 4 groups. 3. Sts switch their seats with classmates from the opposite team and check their answers. 4. Brief FB. 5. T performs the Q&A procedure (8 questions about advertisements). 6. Sts make an advertisement in groups on the topic set by T. 7. T conducts WCFB.

Listening (10-15 minutes) • To develop listening skills

1. T gives brief instructions on the task. 2. T plays the audio once. 3. Sts in pairs discuss their answers. 4. Brief FB. 5. Sts are given HO 2 and instructed what to do. 6. T plays the tape 1-2 times. 7. Sts fill in the gaps. 8. In pairs they check answers. 9. T conducts WCFB.

Wrap-Up (2-5 minutes) • To provide opportunities to summarize the lesson.

T asks the following questions: 1. What did we talk about in this lesson? 2. What did we learn in this lesson? Sts work in pairs, then T conducts WCFB.
