Plural Nouns
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced to regular plural nouns in the context of travel and personal information. They will begin with a gap fill, followed by a worksheet which will be completed in three steps. Students then work with their partner to finish the sentence on the cards. Students will then review the words one last time before we correct their former gap fill activity. If time remains, the class will end with a game.

Main Aims

  • To introduce Ss to regular plural nouns in the context of travel and person information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking (accuracy) using regular plurals

Procedure

Introduction (2 minutes) • Introduce myself

Using the PPT, ask Ss 3 quick questions about myself. Ss may remember the answers from the previous class.

Gap fill (6-8 minutes) • See what students already know

Provide Ss with the gap-fill handout to see what they already know about regular plurals. They will work individually, and I will not give feedback. Ss will put it aside and it will be reviewed at the end of class.

Discovering Plural Nouns (15 minutes) • S independently learn how to recognize how to make plural nouns

Provide Ss with the HO, folded in 3 sections. Section 1: Give Ss the vocab from page 7 and 107, get them to group the words according to the regular plural endings. Give them a few minutes to try, if they don't understand write "book" "bus" and "city" on the board. Solicit the plural forms for these words, write them underneath and possibly underline the "s" "es" "ies" if deemed necessary. Section 2: Ss are given the three list of pluralized nouns categorized by "s" "es" "ies". Ss must look at the groupings and spot the pattern, they may discuss with a classmate. Section 3: Ss are given the rules for pluralization, Ss put the words into the appropriate section

Flip cards (10 minutes) • Students practice speaking the pluralized nouns

PW, but with different partners than before if practical. Assign each Ss A or B. Give each pair cards face down. A picks card, says "a passport", B says "3 passports" ect. I monitor and correct.

Practice / Review (8-10 minutes) • Ss review by writing plural forms of 8 words

Ss write the plurals for the same words. p. 107. Get Ss to come to the board to write the answers.

Gap fill correction (5-7 minutes) • Ss correct their mistakes

Ss check their gap-fill activity from before and correct the incorrect ones. Students check in pairs.

Back-up • Ss review words and play high energy game

One Ss at a time comes to the front, looks at the picture on the PPT and shouts the plural word. Student throws a ball of paper at one of the targets on the board: "S" "ES" "IES". T checks with other WC to see if they were correct, then next student tries.
