Description

n this lesson, students will practice speaking about traveling. Sts will listen to a recording, and answer specific questions. Sts will then practice drilling, and do a HO emphasizing the use of should've and could've as criticisms. Sts will then develop a role play, and act it out in front of the class

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Sts are asked three questions, and must talk in pairs. Questions: Do you have a good sense of direction? Do you ever drive in different cities? Is it stressful? What do you do when you're lost?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Sts will look at a picture, and discuss what they think the people are saying. Sts will be given list of questions about the listening. They will then listen and try to answer the questions. Before the second listening Sts will be given 5 sentences and asked to discuss (PowerPoint slide 2) , what they are talking about.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will put a section of the transcript from the listening. Sts will then discuss the section, and how Steve and Debbie are criticizing each other. T will then ask CCQs to clarify the use of the language could've and should've. T will also indicate that stress is important. (clip from recording) T will drill pronunciation with Sts Sts will work on an HO that uses could've and should've, to clarify meaning. T will also indicate that stress is important.

Productive Task(s) (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Sts are put into pairs, and asked to make a role-play of traveling during a trip. (problems, listening questions relations, who's fault) T will tell Sts they must use could've and should've in their dialogue. T will indicate Sts should act it out a few times before demonstrating it in front of the class.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Sts will act out their dialogue in front of the class. T will correct some parts of the dialogue afterwards, by writing down correct and incorrect sentences on the board. If there is time, Sts will get to criticize the teacher at the end of class.
