Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Modal Verbs could, should plus have in the context of autobiography of a famous business man who made a mistake.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a the contracted forms could've, should've in the context of the rise and fall and rise again of a business man - an autobiography

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set the context of Regret and Criticism, introduce Ratner's short bio and blunder.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

ICQ s before the audio about rather. i ll ask Who feels sorry for Ratner. Who is critical of him? And what is the sentence that express criticism.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show them the structure could've should've shouldn't have to express criticism, regret and suggest alternatives.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Hand out number 1 fill in the gaps with modal verbs

Controlled Practice (6-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Hand out number 2 : questions with the highlighted modal verbs.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Hand outnumber 5: Talk about your ideas for the situation together. Talk about if you have ever been in a situation and regretted things you've said to a friend, a colleague, a stranger, a teacher or thing's you have done: buying things, education , work, friends and family.

Drilling (2-4 minutes) • Memorization, pronunciation
