Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the past simple tense in the context of journeys

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of common irregular verbs in the context of travel

Procedure

Lead-in/Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

I start doing silent dictation by miming and using gestures. I start with waking up and stop at the point when I'm in the boat. I tell them to discuss in groups what' just happened. I ask them to share their ideas by eliciting and writing on the board irregular verbs that we need for the story. We repeat some verbs together (wake up-woke up....) and drill. I continue showing the story from starting fishing till when I caught my fish.We do the same with discussion and drilling. I show them the last part of the story. Repeat the FB(discuss and share).

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit thet all the words on the WB are irregular. Highlight the once which they the most likely to make mistakes with. Write on the board some examples (eg whent fishing, came home).

Clarification (10-11 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

On the board write "I woke up very early today". Clarify the form by eliciting. Highlight the pronunciation and intonation.Drill it. Elicit the negative form by asking the Ss they woke up early till the say no. Highlight the difference between positive and negative forms. Drill. Clarify the interrogative form. Drill. Write another example on the board (He put his clothes on.) Ask if this relates to present or past to highlight the difference.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give them the HO with controlled practice exercise. Give time to finish. Peer-check. Monitor and find out where they make mistakes. Ask them to give some sentences to check with the teacher. Look at the once they've made mistakes with.

Flexi-stage/Semi-Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Give them HO 2. Tell them to work in pairs and write down the sentences about their partners. Monitor. Do error correction if needed. Listen to some examples.(If I see that the Ss are comfortable with using this grammar(since this is not a new topic for them), I'll move on to freer practice)

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Put them into 2 or 3 groups. Give the instruction to tell their partners about their last holiday and try to use the TL. FB by sharing some ideas. Error correction.
