TP6-Job related Vocab

Description

In this lesson students review and practice vocabulary in the context of jobs. The lesson begins with a warmer where Ss discuss their jobs in general. Exposure is provided with a set of pics on WB. TL is further highlighted with a group matching acitivity that will generate discussion. Clarification of the MFP will be done on WB. 2 controlled practice exercises will follow. Semi-Controlled practice will be done orally in pairs. Freer practice consists of a role-play guessing game.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start the lesson by telling the Ss about CELTA coming towards the end and how I am looking to get a job as an ESL teacher. "what do you do?" Ss get in pairs and tell each other "what they do" and one thing about their job they like. FB - 1 or 2 students - What does your partner do? What does your partner like about his/her job?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss are shown pictures of jobs on WB. "Which job do you like? Who do you think makes the most money?" Ss discuss pictures in pairs. W/C FB. Elicit some vocabulary. " Why do you think the ....... makes the most money?" "Who else thinks that this is a well-paid job?" ..." Who would like to be a.... why?"

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss are divided into 3 groups - A, B, C. 2 pics on WB - Waiter and Doctor " Look at the pictures. Which words go under which picture? Discuss in your group. I will give you 3 minutes. When I'll say "Leaders", the leaders of the groups will come to the WB and put the words under the pictures. Pick your leader. Someone who can run (mime) fast!". ICQ : What will you do? How much time do you have? Do you all come to the whiteboard? They are given cut-ups of vocab items.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

TL is on WB. Elicit the meaning of TL . CCQs. Temporary = Is this a job you have for a long time? Permanent = Is this a job you have for a short time…or long time? Part-time = Do you work all day? A few hours? Full-time = Do you work a few hours or all day? Well-Paid = Do you get a lot of money? Badly-Paid = It doesn’ pay a lot…or does it? Unemployed = Do you have a job? Or not? Wage = Do you get money by the hour or …every month…year? Salary = Do you get money by the hour or …every month….year? Clarify the form " Badly-paid" "well-paid" . CCQ " Can I say bad-paid?" "Can I say good-paid?" ADVERB “I work full-time.” ADJECTIVE I have a part-time job.” Pronunciation - Choral Drilling, Group Drilling for "temporary" , "permanent" and "unemployed"

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1) Circle the Correct Definition Ss work individually on Definitions. " Work Alone. Circle A or B. When you're done, check with your partner " ICQ.... What will you circle? Who will you check with? When? - Answer Key on WB 2) Complete Sentences " Fill in the blanks alone. There is a mistake. Cross out number 5. Don't do it. " ICQs - Will you do number 5 ? Are you working with your partner? "Check with your partners now" - Answer Key on WB

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Regroup - Banana, Apple Students practice vocabulary items through a series of semi-controlled questions. 1) What jobs are well-paid in Turkey? What jobs are badly paid? W/C FB 2) Did you ever have a part-time job? When was that? Did you like it? W/C FB 3) Why do you think a lot of people are unemployed? W/C FB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Each S picks a cut-up with a job written on it. Demo it with a student. " We have new jobs. Hmm.... Is your job well-paid?"....Hmmm.." Do you usually work part-time or full-time?" If you guess right... go and speak to a new person and ask questions to guess their job. W/C FB. " So who was a chef...?" "Hmm...which job was the hardest to guess?"
