In this lesson, I am focusing on the Ss listening abilities and asking questions in a polite way.

Abc Handouts containing questions from the listening 1 and listening 2.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show visuals and try to bring the context to modern Istanbul and small towns.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Expose them to the language and situation they are about to listen and give them the questions for the first listening. Questions on WB: In her experience, is it easier to talk to strangers in Nigeria or the UK? Why? What places and situations does she mention? What would be a strange thing to do in Nigeria, according to Mariama?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

To bring the situation to Istanbul, encouraging to discuss: where you live, how often people talk to strangers in the following situations? queue/line bus/metro in the street in shops at the movies at a party Tell me if situation has changed in the last 10 or 20 years? Do you speak with people in these situations? Why Why not

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Listening 2 is a long one. It will be a challenge for them. I ll ask them to pick an example of polite questions from each of the sections: A through E.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask to talk / discuss what they have leaned, first in small groups then with the neighbouring ones.

Vocabulary Polite ways of Talking to strangers (3-5 minutes) • Expand abilities
