Materials

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for being descriptive in the context of facial parts.
  • To provide clarification, review and practice of face parts in the context of facial description.

Procedure

warmer/lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will describe a famous Turkish TV contestant's face to class and ask them draw it for me. During the description my main aim will be to elicit and use the target words as memory, forget, remember, and some face parts as chin, eyebrows, eyelashes etc. He has dark hair. My memory is really weak/bad, I think he has short hair. He has a big forehead. He has small, dark eyes. He has thick eyebrows. He has short but thick eyelashes. He has a big mouth and good teeth. He has small ears. He has a square face. He has a normal chin. It is not too long or too short. He has a small nose. He has a beard. After the description, I will ask the ss to check their pictures in pairs. I will show the photo of the contestant, after I check their pictures. The pictures will show me, the ss' knowledge on the target word unit; face parts.

Exposure/ Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • to provide context for the target language through a situation

First, one by one, will stick the target vocabulary on the board. Each time I put a word, I will make the ss repeat after me. The first part of this exercise will be only for pronunciation. There will be 16 words from face parts as; Eye Hair Mouth Teeth Tooth Ear Nose Chin Beard Moustache Lip Cheek Eyelash Eyebrow Tongue Forehead After the pronunciation, I will ask each student to come up to wb and place one word to its correction location on the large oval that I will draw on the board. Through this exercise, my aim is to highlight and clarify the target words of the unit 9c "Never forget a face".

controlled&semi-controlled practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare ss for more meaningful practice

In pairs, the ss will describe each other at least 2 people from the pictures given. They will be asked to use phrases as; His chin is big. Her eyes are small. His cheeks are red and etc. While monitoring, i will note down major mistakes and will fix them right after the pair work. I expect to hear some general mistakes that L1 Turkish speakers tend to make as teeths, hairs, beards and etc. After the correction, I plan to pick 2 weak, and one mediocre student from the class. Each will be asked to describe one of the class members' face to entire class without giving his/her name. The ss who listen will try to guess and find who that might be..

Semi-Controlled & Freer Practice/ Production (8-10 minutes) • to provide an opportunity to practice target language skills

will divide glass into two groups. Each group will pick one ss to draw on board. The ss who draws on the wb won't be allowed to see the photos. The rest of the group will describe the person's face on the photo to the selected ss to draw it on the board. The photos will be from an old Turkish show called "ask-i memnu". Surely, none of the photos will look familiar to their original ones. The aim in this exercise to push ss to describe a real person in the TL as fluently and accurately possible. At this stage, I expect students to use phrases as; she has curly/wavy/straight hair. he has a long face. To connect the lesson with the up coming listening part, I will end up the class by opening a class discussion on memory. Will ask ss questions as; Do you have a good memory?Which one is easier for you, remembering someone's name or face? Do you generally forget names?
