Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students practice reading and speaking, in the context of a topic which is related to our health at work or while studying. The students will be also discussing about exercising the body at work.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency through pair and group discussions in the context of exercising body while working

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about problems and advice for people who sit for a long time

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through eliciting the main topic

Tell students to stand up. Then give them a series of instructions. Every time I give them one of the instructions, I mime it, and then give the sts some time to do the action. Stretch your arms above your head. Shake your left leg. Shake your right leg. Move your left shoulder. Move your right shoulder. Move your neck to the left – now to the right. Now sit down. Ask students: Do you feel good now? Is it a good idea to move around when you are working or studying?

Pairwork Discussion (8-9 minutes) • To practice speaking by answering to general questions related to health issues, with particular focus on sitting

The students work on the first exercise (Ex1) in pairs. I will first model the activity by asking three or four of the questions at random to students in the class. Then they will put into pairs and asked to answer questions. Feedback class session will be held. The students will tell the class about their partner. I will check who replied Yes to more than two questions.

Pre-reading (8-9 minutes) • The sts will try to guess what will the reading be about

i will tell the students that exercise is related to the magazine article. In this exercise, I will ask them to try to guess, in pairs, what the rest of the article is about. They will be given three options: a. Working in an office and going on holiday b. A history of chairs c. Problems and advice for people who sit for a long time An extra task will also be provided, so the students can also guess some of the key phrases from the article: a. a comfortable chair b. keep your back straight c. go on holiday d. stretch your arms e. take frequent breaks f. eat chocolate Feedback from the pairs.

Reading (10-12 minutes) • The students will practice both skim and scan reading

The students will be given a couple of minutes to read the article and find out the answers from the previous exercise. Feedback will be taken from the class. The next exercise is focused on certain details. The students will read the article again and will be asked to put the phrases bellow in the right place: a. Take breaks often b. Drink water c. Move your body d. Sit correctly

Discussion (8-10 minutes) • To practice speaking

The students will be divided into groups and asked to discuss which points from the previous exercise they are doing when sitting for a long time?
