Body Parts lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn body parts through some fun games and a matching exercise. The lesson starts with a drawing in order to introduce the context. It is followed by the demonstration of flashcards. Then, Ss work on a matching exercise on page 95. The lesson ends with the game ''Simon Says'' as well as a productive task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To expand students' knowledge of vocabulary teaching ''parts of the body''

Subsidiary Aims

  • To familiarize students with imperatives through the game ''Simon Says''
  • To motivate students to engage in classroom activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and draw students' attention to the target items

The teacher greets Ss and draws a boy on the board with some body parts missing( neck, mouth, one arm, one ear). Ss are invited to say what's missing. After eliciting the answers, the teacher asks ''what are these called?'' (Body Parts!)

Presentation of Lexis (8-10 minutes) • To introduce body parts via flashcards and practise pronunciation

Ss are shown a list of flashcards one by one with the names of body parts written on them. Ss repeat each word after the teacher.(drilling) When all cards are shown, the teacher holds up the flashcards without letting Ss see the word written on them. Ss are encouraged to shout out which body parts they are. This activity is done twice to ensure that Ss are familiar and confident with the new vocabulary.

Written Practice of Lexis (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to spell the target items accurately

Ss are given a handout and put into pairs to do Ex 1 on page 95. The answers are elicited and Ss move on to matching the words with the body parts in Ex 2. They check and compare their answers with the other pairs.

Oral Practice of Lexis (8-10 minutes) • To prompt students to practise body parts through a speaking activity

Ss are told to stand up and follow the teacher's instructions: ''Teacher says touch your nose''. Ss touch their noses. The teacher: ''Touch your shoulder''. Ss that have touched their shoulders are explained that they shouldn't follow the instructions if they don't start with ''Teacher says...'' The teacher gives one more instruction to make sure they have understood the rules of the game. Then, a random student is invited to give instructions. Ss who make a mistake have to sit down. When a student makes a mistake, another student takes turns to give instructions. The game continues until there is a winner.

Further Lexis Practice (10-12 minutes) • To help consolidate the new vocabulary with a productive task

The teacher writes the names of some animals on the board. (monkey, giraffe, elephant, snake, spider. etc.) Ss who know these words explain to those who don't. The teacher picks an animal and writes 2 sentences about that animal on the board in order to demonstrate the activity. The teacher puts Ss in pairs. Then, each pair is distributed a card with the name of an animal written on it. Pairs are allowed one minute to write a few sentences similar to the ones on the board to describe their animals. The teacher walks around and offers assistance when needed. One student from each pair comes to the front of the class and reads his/her sentences so that the others can predict which animal on the board that is. The game continues until all the pairs describe their animals.
